1

Monarch Beach Resort

Dana Point, California, United States

The sprawling St. Regis Monarch Beach is situated on a beautiful golf course overlooking the Pacific Ocean. With elegant, comfortable rooms, large, beautiful bathrooms, and stunning grounds, it's easily one of the nicest hotels in Orange County. The well-equipped business center features a 60-inch plasma TV; video conferencing technology; a projection screen and integrated sound system; and a remote-controlled AV.

2

The Resort at Pelican Hill

Newport Beach, California, United States

The ultra-luxe Pelican Hill is a sprawling, immaculately kept resort (500 acres!) with two golf courses, a 23,000-square-foot spa, two pools, five restaurants, and 332 bungalows and villas. The rooms are large, with top-notch technology (although the absence of iPod docks is surprising) and beige decor (of the upscale variety, not the bland kind). All rooms feature large marble bathrooms, fireplaces, and terraces, many with ocean views. One downside to the size of the property is that guests have to take the resort's shuttle to get around, but it's hard to find many other faults with this luxury hotel.

3

Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach Resort

Huntington Beach, California, United States

Located in the heart of Huntington Beach, just across the road from the water's edge, the four-pearl Shorebreak Hotel has a laid-back, surf-inspired atmosphere that attracts leisure and business travelers alike. Rooms run a bit small but come with spacious showers, and some of the suites have large terraces. The hotel also has a number of facilities aimed at business travelers, including a large business center, an enormous ballroom that can be split up into many different meeting rooms, and a suite with a projection board. There's a high daily fee for Wi-Fi and no pool or spa, but there is an on-site restaurant open morning until night and plenty of places to eat in the immediate vicinity.

4

Balboa Bay Resort

Newport Beach, California, United States

The 160-room Balboa Bay Resort is one of Newport Beach's most upscale properties, and has excellent restaurants, a spa, plenty of meeting facilities, and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Rooms have elegant Mediterranean style, and all come with private balconies. The hotel is under a 10-minute drive to the sand, and has a waterfront location on a marina (part of the exclusive Balboa Bay Club). Just be aware that the resort fees, breakfast fees, and parking fees can add up, and some guests may start to feel nickel and dimed. Its quiet, low-key environment, huge spa, and scenic water views make it well-suited to couples, while the extensive event facilities (including 20 meeting rooms) draw the suit and tie set.

5

Four Points by Sheraton Anaheim

Anaheim, California, United States

With modern touches and contemporary furnishings, the mid-range Hotel Menage strives to offer an upscale experience at a budget price, and does a fairly good job at it. Its location near the Disney Parks and the Anaheim Garden Walk makes it convenient for families and leisure travelers, and extra touches such as free Wi-Fi, an on-site restaurant and bar, a stylish business center, and a variety of meeting spaces and ballrooms add value for business travelers. All rooms are spacious, especially the extra-large family suites. Some of the rooms and public areas feel a bit worn, and some past guests have complained that the Wi-Fi signal in rooms is weak.

6

The Anabella

Catering to families looking for a spa experience as well as business travelers in town for local conventions, the Anabella is right next to the Anaheim Convention Center and a short drive to Disneyland and the California Adventure Park. The 358 rooms here range from standards to suites, and all have free Wi-Fi and classic, muted decor. There are two pools on the property, one of which is a designated quiet space, as well as a whirlpool and a restaurant serving everything from children's snacks to cocktails.

7
