Bottom Line

The mid-range ByWard Blue Inn offers comfortable accommodations for affordable rates in a central Ottawa location. It's situated on the edge of bustling ByWard Market, and although it's surrounded by restaurants and nightclubs, the property's street is residential and relatively peaceful. The 46 studio-style guest rooms are contemporary and very well-maintained, with hardwood floors and nicely equipped kitchenettes. Many units feature balconies with city views. There's no full restaurant or fitness center, but freebies include hot breakfast, loaner laptops, afternoon tea with treats, and a sauna that can be reserved. Travelers looking for a property with more amenities such as a restaurant and pool can check out Cartier Place Suites Hotel.

Oyster Hotel Review

A small and quiet hotel housed in a historic building

This small hotel is housed in a historic, six-floor brick building that dates back to 1913. It went through major renovations in the 1980s, when three floors were added. The registration area of the lobby is modest, but it opens up to a larger space with brown leather furniture set in front of a fireplace. Colorful original art by B.F. Wallace adds a dash of cheery energy and makes the space an inviting place to relax. The adjacent breakfast room is bright and has plenty of seating, and there's a small courtyard for dining in warmer weather. Couples make up the bulk of guests, but the hotel also attracts some families and business travelers.

On a quiet residential street, a short walk from ByWard Market

The ByWard Blue Inn is located in the heart of Ottawa, just a bit north of the downtown business district. It’s a short walk to dozens of restaurants and nightclubs, and only five minutes on foot from ByWard Market Square. The National Gallery of Canada is a 10-minute walk, and reaching Rideau Canal, the Shaw Centre (formerly the Ottawa Convention Centre), and the Rideau Centre mall is about 12 minutes on foot. Parliament Hill is roughly a 15-minute walk. Ottawa International Airport and the Canadian Tire Centre, home of pro hockey’s Ottawa Senators, are both about a 20-minute drive.

Modern and well-equipped with kitchenettes, robes, slippers, and free Wi-Fi

The hotel's comfortable guest rooms have simple but elegant decor, and feature kitchenettes, light hardwood floors, and colorful art that adds a cheery splash of color. Units are bright, contemporary, and very well-maintained, with a mix of white and espresso furniture that includes desks with office chairs and small dining tables. Many have spacious balconies or patios, some of which offer lovely city views, though others overlook surrounding buildings or the inner courtyard. Layouts are studio-style (Queens and Double Twins), with small kitchens that contain wet bars, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and utensils. Storage is provided by open closets and adjacent shelves. Standard amenities include robes, slippers, safes, 32-inch flat screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms have Formica-style vanities, shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries.

Free hot breakfast and afternoon tea with snacks, but no full restaurant or gym

The hotel doesn't have a full restaurant or gym, but it offers ample freebies. The free morning spread includes eggs and bacon or ham, and later in the day there's tea and coffee with cheese, crackers, fruit, and other treats. The hotel’s sauna and adjacent shower room can be reserved by the hour at no extra charge, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. Other amenities include a business center with loaner laptops and a printer, a small meeting room, valet dry cleaning and laundry service, and covered on-site parking for a reasonable rate that's first-come, first-serve.
