Bottom Line

The 129-room Hotel Astor Saint-Honore is an upper-middle-range property in the 8th Arrondissement, close to the Champs-Elysees as well as upscale shopping and major tourist attractions. Rooms are charming, with classic Parisian decor, and they all have balconies or terraces -- some with outstanding views of Paris. Some rooms and public spaces are in need of an update, however, but the hotel was acquired by the Hilton brand in 2015 and a makeover is planned for late 2016. The hotel's restaurant serves seasonal cuisine, and the British-style bar offers drinks and light fare. Groups can gather in the hotel's four meeting rooms and there's a small fitness room as well. The nearby InterContinental Paris Avenue Marceau is more modern, but rates will be higher.

Scene

Cozy, charming hotel in the style of a Parisian apartment buildings

Red awnings and flower-draped wrought-iron balconies distinguish this seven-story building, constructed in the early 20th century. Glass doors lead to a cozy and welcoming lobby, which features vintage oak paneling and columns, a carved ceiling, and sofa and chair groupings where guests can hang out. Newspapers and magazines are supplied, and a big-screen TV keeps everyone up-to-date on the latest news and sports scores. Carpeted stairs and a small elevator lead to upper floors. Interiors are well-worn and in need of some sprucing up, though, which is planned for late 2016 -- the Hilton brand took over the hotel in 2015 and plans to modernize it. The hotel is suitable for business travelers and leisure tourists seeking a central location close to upscale shopping and major attractions.

Location

In the upscale 8th Arrondissement, walk to shopping and major attractions

The hotel is situated in a quiet area in the 8th Arrondissement, between Saint-Lazare, the Champs-Elysees, and Madeleine. The area is full of restaurants and bars, as well as luxury shopping and company offices. The Champs-Elysees, Madeleine Church, and the famed department store Galeries Lafayette are all within a 10-minute walk. Jardin des Tuileries, the Grand Palais, and Opera Garnier can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. The Saint-Augustin Metro station is a five-minute walk from the hotel and provides easy access around the city; the Eiffel Tower can be reached in about 25 minutes. Charles de Gaulle Airport is about a 40-minute drive from here, while Orly Airport is about 35 minutes away. Both can be reached by train in about an hour.

Rooms

Classic French-style rooms with minibars and balconies or terraces with nice views

Rooms feature charming, classic decor reminiscent of a vintage Parisian apartment, with high-end linens, patterned carpeting, striped wallpaper, and polished mahogany furniture. Colors run toward soft hues of gray, brown, violet, and blues. The two-level Rooftop Suites are particularly appealing, with a bedroom on the first floor and a sitting area and bar on the second. A large furnished balcony provides outstanding views of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower in the distance. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, electric kettles, stocked minibars, and safes. Lovely tiled bathrooms come with robes and slippers, hairdryers, and upscale French toiletries. Suites can be combined with rooms to accommodate families and groups traveling together.

Features

Restaurant and bar, room service, four elegant meeting rooms, and free Wi-Fi

Like many upper-middle-range hotels in central Paris, features are a bit limited here. The Restaurant l'Astor serves seafood and seasonal cuisine in a cozy Art Nouveau-style space with white tablecloths and red seat cushions. Jazz at the Astor provides live music once a month. Lunch is served in the courtyard, and room service is available. Breakfast is included with some rooms, but not most and it can be expensive for what's on offer (continental fare plus hot dishes like eggs). The British-styled Bar Astor serves light fare for lunch and drinks and snacks in the evening. Four elegant on-site meeting rooms can accommodate up to 80 people. There's also a small fitness room as well as a business corner with a computer, plus Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
