Bottom Line

For travelers interested in shopping at the SM City Mall of Asia, the mid-range Golden Phoenix Hotel Manila fits the bill, as it’s just across the street. It’s a modern hotel with 281 contemporary rooms that cover all the amenity basics from minibars to kettles, as well as plenty of hotel features like an outdoor pool and small gym. While the hotel provides most things any traveler might need, it feels a bit average in terms of style. The breakfast buffet offers Western and Asian cuisine, but it costs a fee, and the restaurant doesn’t receive rave reviews. There are also reports of slow Wi-Fi and cleanliness issues throughout. If a location closer to the city center is of importance, Ramada Manila Central is a good alternative with similar amenities (minus the pool).

Golden Phoenix Hotel Manila

Scene

Modern hotel with a confusing interior and a clientele of families and couples

Golden Phoenix Hotel Manila is situated in a blocky modern building on a fairly busy road near the SM City Mall of Asia. Overall, the hotel is clean and modern, but doesn't stand out in terms of design. White marble floors and matching reception desk in the lobby are chic, while a globe chandelier hanging over a table with flowers set on a maroon and gold circular rug give off an elegant vibe. Travelers (mostly couples and families) tend to keep to themselves and only interact at breakfast or around the pool. Past guests have mentioned a confusing layout of floors and elevators that generally requires assistance from front staff to navigate.

Location

30-minute drive from Manila but across the street from SM City Mall of Asia

Despite being a 30-minute drive from Manila’s city center, location is one of this hotel's highlights as it’s just across the street from the SM City Mall of Asia and the Mall of Asia Arena. Similarly, there’s plenty of dining options within a 10-minute walk. As for public transportation, there are a few bus stops within a three-minute walk away. Many attractions are only reachable by car. For instance, Manila Ocean Park takes 13 minutes to reach. Fort Santiago is a 15-minute drive away. Ninoy Aquino International Airport is an 11-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Contemporary rooms with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and kettles

The rooms at this property have a contemporary decor that’s mostly reflective of a chain hotel design. That doesn’t mean it’s not stylish in a sense -- the cream walls and laminate wooden floors contrasts well with the white bedding with brown and teal accents and lovely gray padded headboards. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, kettles, safes, and flat-screen TVs. For some extra space and a living room, you'll have to upgrade to one of the Executive Suites. Bathrooms are similarly modern with showers with toiletries in wall-mounted dispensers. Hairdryers are provided. There are past reports of air-conditioning issues and cleanliness problems.

Features

An outdoor pool, dated gym, and Philipino restaurant

Golden Phoenix Hotel Manila is home to a good selection of features starting with an outdoor swimming pool with a small shallow section for children. Travelers can stay fit with a gym that has a decent selection of dated cardio and weight machines. The breakfast buffet costs a small fee, but includes western and Asian options. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers a la carte international and local options, though it’s not highly praised by visitors. Beyond an on-site jewelry store, the only other amenity is free Wi-Fi, which is reportedly slow at times.
