Bottom Line

The mid-range DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland is a busy business hotel within walking distance of the Oregon Convention Center and Moda Center. It’s located across the Willamette River from downtown, but it's a two-minute walk to the MAX light rail station at the Lloyd Center shopping mall. All 477 guest rooms have balconies and contemporary decor, with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, balconies, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no safes, fridges, or microwaves, and some units show wear. Highlights include ample meeting space, full-service restaurant/bar with a weekend breakfast buffet (fee), gym, and a small outdoor pool. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland

Scene

A busy business hotel that hosts lots of corporate and social events

This busy hotel near the Oregon Convention Center attracts mostly business travelers. But sports and music fans attending events at the nearby Moda Center also stay here on weekends, when the hotel hosts lots of weddings and other social gatherings. Consequently, the modern lobby bustles with activity all week. It’s a modest and relaxed space, with a large registration desk and plenty of places to sit. The Gather Food & Drink is a particularly lively spot in the evening, with low lighting, rustic wood details, and oversize leather armchairs in front of a gas fireplace.

Location

In Lloyd District, within walking distance to the convention center, but far from downtown

The DoubleTree is located across the Willamette River from downtown Portland in the Lloyd District, where several restaurants and a few other hotels are nearby. Holladay Park is across the street, and the light rail (MAX) station at Lloyd Center is just two minutes away on foot. Lloyd Center is a large mall with several department stores, shops, and restaurants, including a Starbucks. The Oregon Convention Center is a 13-minute walk or six minutes by MAX, and the Moda Center is 14 minutes on foot or six minutes by MAX. Pioneer Courthouse Square in the heart of downtown is 15 minutes by MAX or a 12-minute drive, and Old Town/Chinatown is 11 minutes by MAX. Portland International Airport is 30 minutes by MAX or an 18-minute drive.

Rooms

Contemporary with balconies and coffeemakers, but no microwaves or mini-fridges

High ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and plenty of space give these clean rooms a comfortable ambiance, but there’s nothing necessarily distinctive about them. They're done in light earth tones, with brown-patterned carpet and cream walls. Accent colors can vary by room, such as red upholstered armchairs and butterscotch leather sofas (Premium Kings). Various pieces of the reddish-brown wood furniture have tan or black granite tops, but some of the furniture we saw was showing signs of wear.

King, Queen, and Double Queen are the options in the Standard and Premium rooms, and all rooms feature desks with leather office chairs and balconies with views of the surrounding area. Suites come in multiple options and include separate living rooms, wet bars, and fridges. Some suites, such as the Governors Suite, also feature whirlpool tubs and multiple balconies.

Bathrooms are average in size and include granite vanities and small walk-in showers with glass doors or shower/tub combos with tan tiling. Standard amenities include 32-inch flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers with free tea and instant coffee, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no microwaves or safes. A limited number of mini-fridges are available upon request.

Features

Restaurant/bar, tons of meeting space, plus a gym, but fee for breakfast and small pool

This business hotel features an impressive inventory of event space that includes four ballrooms and an executive meeting center. Up to 1,000 people can be hosted in the hotel’s 45,000 square feet of meeting space. Free Wi-Fi and a business center are offered as well.

For dining, The Multnomah Grille is open daily for breakfast and features a hot buffet on weekends, but it costs extra. Gather Food & Drink features locally-sourced, seasonal fare for lunch and dinner, and its bar has daily happy hour specials. Room service is available.

Wellness amenities include a spacious and well-equipped gym with free weights, weight-training machines, and several cardio machines, including four Precor treadmills with video screens. The outdoor seasonal pool is on the small side, however. The hotel also has a fleet of bicycles for rent.

There's a lobby gift shop that sells snacks, soft drinks, and sundries, and it has an ATM. Valet dry cleaning and laundry services are available, and the front desk has a guest safe deposit box. Valet and self-parking are available in the hotel’s attached garage, but both options are a bit expensive. Pets are welcome with a modest surcharge, and arriving guests receive the brand’s signature hot chocolate chip cookies as a treat.
