The Hostel Downtown is a clean and friendly budget hostel geared toward young and social travelers. The hostel organizes daily free activities, such as beer tastings and cooking sessions, as well as paid walking tours. Private en-suite rooms, rooms with shared bathrooms, and dorms are all clean and colorful (but not air-conditioned) with whimsical wall murals. The facilities -- which include a large, well-equipped public kitchen -- are also bright and clean. Since hotels are fairly inexpensive in Prague, the private rooms are not exactly a bargain for couples, but might be worth it for young travelers looking to meet other guests.
Scene
Fun, young, and colorful hostel
This hostel has a fun, laid-back vibe with a look that’s a cross between a college dorm and a kindergarten classroom. Walls are painted in bright colors and snapshots of guests and staff hang around the lobby. Colorful murals of Prague’s attractions decorate the hallways and the front desk is papered with a collage of posters. The breakfast room and kitchen area is painted yellow and orange and is a bit more sophisticated, with sleek gray tables and a funky black and white drawing on the ceiling. An attached lounge area has purple, pink, and lime green velvet cushions over Astroturf benches, and there’s a piano and guitar that guests can use. The atmosphere is relaxed and as is the norm is hostels, can be a bit noisy due to late night revelry.
Location
Between New Town and Old Town, in walking distance to shops and attractions
This hostel has a convenient location on a main road between New Town and Old Town, surrounded by public transportation options, restaurants, and bars. Most attractions can be reached on foot, including Wenceslas Square, Old Town Square, and Charles Bridge, which are all within a 10-minute walk. It’s also around the corner from the Národní Třída underground stop and down the street from the National Theatre. It’s a 20-minute drive to Vaclav Havel Airport and about 40 minutes to an hour via public transportation.
Rooms
Clean and colorful private rooms and dorms
This hostel offers mixed dormitories and separate female dorms that house up to nine guests, as well as en-suite rooms for up to six people and private rooms with shared bathrooms for up to nine guests. Sheets and towels are provided, along with padlocks for lockers. The rooms are clean and bright, with blue patterned comforters and colorful, whimsical murals. The private rooms are themed, with decor to match -- there’s a dragon, a cat room, and a National Theatre room that has the painted silhouette of the building on the wall in place of a headboard. The clean bathrooms are similarly bright, with wide tiles in shades of yellow and large shower stalls. Avoid rooms on the first floor or at the front of the building to get away from inevitable street noise.
