The Red and Blue
Design Hotel is an upper-middle-range, 52-room property occupying an impressive
early 20th-century building in Prague's Smíchov district. While it's located
opposite a large and picturesque park, the hotel is a bit of a trek from the historic Old Town, so public transport is required to explore most tourist attractions. Air-conditioned rooms are generally spacious and clean, while free breakfast and
on-site parking are a bonus. Rates are competitive too, though guests may also want to consider the nearby Hotel Julian.
Scene
Imposing early 20th-century building with striking, contemporary vibe
Despite the name,
the Red and Blue Design Hotel is housed in an elegantly imposing early 20th-century building with an eye-catching, white neoclassical facade. Stepping inside, however, the scene is
strikingly modern with chalk white walls, a sparkling red reception desk, and a brushed steel backdrop welcoming guests in numerous different languages.
Polished chrome hanging lights and wall-mounted lamps give the lobby low-lit
moody atmosphere, while scant furnishings and decor add to its sparse,
minimalist ambience. The hotel opened in 2009 after major renovations, which
can be seen throughout the property, while retaining elements of the original
interiors in its arched ceilings and winding staircase of polished concrete. Guests are mainly tourists wanting accommodations outside of the hectic city center -- the spacious lobby bar, with its pale gray carpeting and clusters of modern couches, is a comfortable spot for a post-sightseeing cocktail.
Location
Set opposite the picturesque Kinsky Gardens in Smíchov -- about a mile from Old Town
The hotel is
located on the largely residential north edge of Prague's Smíchov district a
few blocks west of the Vltava River and opposite the expansive and picturesque Kinsky
Gardens. The setting is relatively quiet and un-touristy, which means it's a
bit of a trek (around 30 minutes' walk) to the city's famous castle or
historical Wenceslas Square -- however abundant local trams reach both locales in about 15
minutes. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, and
the Legion Bridge (Most Legií) to Střelecký Island and across the river is 15
minutes' on foot. The hotel's location to the west of the capital's center
gives easy road access to Prague's Václav Havel Airport -- about 15 to 20 minutes by car.
Rooms
Simple, modern-chic with free Wi-Fi and choice of pillows
The hotel has 52
rooms in all; 26 are designed in red, and 26 in blue (hence the hotel's name).
Decor in both is minimal, modern-chic with simple contemporary furnishings and
striped carpet floors, with patterned wall coverings and glitzy lamps for punch. Standard room amenities include free Wi-Fi, tea/coffee
facilities, minibars, and flat-screen TVs with international channels -- pillow and duvet "menus" are also available to guests. Rooms are air-conditioned, relatively
spacious, and with clean, contemporary bathrooms providing stall showers, wall-mounted hairdryers, and heated towel rails. Superior rooms have a little more space, as well as
bathtubs, and views over the city.
Features
Starkly minimal breakfast room and funky lounge bar
The hotel serves
a full hot and cold buffet breakfast (free of charge) in the almost starkly
minimal dining area replete with modern plastic design furniture and views onto
a courtyard and scrappy collection of plants. A lounge bar serves drinks in
funky, contemporary surrounds though there's no restaurant on-site (though
plenty in the surrounding area). There are also no spa or fitness facilities,
however guests are welcome to join the hotel owners for a morning jog in the
park opposite.
