Bottom Line

This budget hotel has a great location by the harbor and Point Loma Naval Base, and is a good value for the amenities. The 90-room property offers free breakfast; a shuttle bus service to the airport, cruise ship terminal, and train station; and free parking -- a rarity for San Diego. While very convenient to the airport, it’s not right in the middle of downtown, but most attractions are an easy drive or bus ride away. Some guest rooms have marina views, and while popcorn ceilings make them look a touch dated, they're otherwise clean and modern. This is an ideal spot for fishing and for travelers who enjoy being by the water.

Best Western Yacht Harbor Hotel

Scene

Older-looking chain property with some modern common spaces and a pleasant pool area

The exterior of the Best Western Yacht Harbor has a slightly retro look with white textured walls. The sunny lobby is a bit more up-to-date, offering a comfortable seating area decorated with gray walls, blue- and cream-colored fabric couches, and framed black-and-white photos of sailboats. The lobby also has free coffee throughout the day, a flat-screen TV, and dozens of travel brochures. Guests can catch a glimpse of the water from windows throughout the property. The pool area sits right near the hotel entrance, so it’s not very private, and the hot tub is somewhat dingy looking, though the surrounding palm trees and newer lounge chairs make it a nice spot to relax. Guests are a mix of tourists and service men and women, as the property is about five minutes from Point Loma Naval Base.

Location

Across from the harbor, with a free shuttle bus to the airport

This Best Western sits right across the street from the America's Cup Harbor, so it’s just a couple of minutes' walk to fishing-related activities, including Fisherman’s Landing, which offers fishing trips and chartered boats. There are several restaurants within walking distance, including a seafood eatery and fast-food chains. It’s a five-minute drive to the San Diego International Airport, and from morning to evening the hotel runs a free shuttle there, as well as to the cruise ship terminal and Santa Fe Depot Station, which is served by Amtrak and commuter rail. Downtown San Diego is a 15-minute drive or about 30 minutes by bus. SeaWorld is a 10-minute drive, or 40 minutes to one hour by bus.

Rooms

Clean and simple, with some older touches

The hotel’s 90 King and Two Queen Rooms are somewhat dated, with retro-style popcorn ceilings, though otherwise quite modern with gray walls, beige-patterned carpeting, and simple wood furniture. Narrow vanities sit outside of the small bathrooms, which have shower/tub combos with peachy tile and basic fixtures. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, coffee and tea facilities, irons and ironing boards, and hairdryers. Harbor view rooms overlook the marina, and all rooms have small balconies. Some rooms can get noise from the surrounding streets and airport.
