Despite its name, GUSTI Bed & Breakfast Singapore is a hostel, not a bed-and-breakfast. There are no private rooms here -- just simple dorms with wooden bunks and shared bathrooms -- but the rates are some of the lowest in town. The property is located in a quiet street with limited dining options nearby, but public transportation is just around the corner. Wi-Fi and a basic breakfast are included in rates, though towel rentals cost extra.
Scene
Bare-bones hostel with large communal lounges
The GUSTI is owned by an Indonesian expat who also operates the hostel. It occupies all but the ground floor of a four-story commercial building and there's a small lounge area and lockers beside the front desk on the hostel's bottom floor. Communal lounges are found on every floor thereafter and are adorned with photographs from a local photographer (the owner's sister) and comfortable couches.
Location
On a quiet street near Little India, north of the city center
GUSTI Bed & Breakfast Singapore is in a quiet neighborhood near Little India, north of downtown Singapore. There aren't many attractions within the immediate area, but it's about a 15-minute walk into the main stretch Little India. The hip boutiques on the popular Haji Lane in the Kampong Glam neighborhood is around 20 minutes away on foot; here travelers can also find many cafes, bars, and restaurants. The closest MRT station is a two-minute walk around the corner on Lavender Street. It's about an 18-minute drive to Changi International Airport, or 42-minutes via public transportation.
Rooms
Basic shared dorms with bunk beds
GUSTI has 10 dorm rooms spread across three floors, all with either six or eight bunk beds. Rooms have a clean, simple decor scheme, with pastel-colored walls and white beds and floors. Small windows let in plenty of natural light. Bunk beds have neither privacy curtains nor personal reading lights, so guests should expect to adapt to each other's preferences. There are shared bathrooms on each floor with walk-in showers, toilets, and shampoo dispensers, and guests can rent towels for a nominal fee.
Features
Communal lounges and kitchen, plus free breakfast
The hostel's communal kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, a toaster, and a microwave, along with crockery and dish ware. A simple breakfast of white toast and instant coffee or tea is included in the rates. There's also a lounge with a water cooler dispensing hot and cold water and a communal TV with an Xbox along with a selection of books and board games for guests to borrow. Lockers are provided free of charge, but the use of padlocks costs extra. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
