Bottom Line

The 210-room Imperial Boat House Beach Resort is a three-and-a-half-pearl property situated right on the beautiful Choeng Mon Beach with multiple dining options within walking distance. Rooms are attractively decorated in a Thai style, and some were created out of old river barges for a unique experience. All come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, electric kettles, and furnished balconies or terraces. The on-site restaurant and bar serves all meals, including a breakfast buffet and themed dinners some nights. The boat-shaped outdoor pool is lovely, and overlooks the beautiful sandy beach, where free snorkel equipment and kayaks are offered. Guests looking for a more lavish experience could check out the nearby SALA Samui Resort And Spa, but rates there are much higher.

Scene

Well-kept larger-scale resort within lovely tropical gardens, on a wide sandy beach

Travelers coming to Koh Samui don't always manage to find a quiet place to bed down, but the Imperial Boat House Beach Resort -- despite its larger footprint -- manages to feel tranquil and away from it all. It's nestled amid lovely tropical gardens, with walkways winding through the trees and plants all the way to the beach. Water features add to the beauty and serenity of the grounds. Inside, a long reception desk spans one side of the huge open-air lobby, and interiors have a simple, but modern look. Upholstered benches provide places for guests to hang out. Oars on the columns are indicative of the nautical theme throughout, though it's kept mostly tasteful. This is a quiet, relaxing place in a beautiful setting that's most appealing to couples, but families, groups and individuals also stay here.

Location

Quiet location on Choeng Mon Beach within walking distance of many restaurants

This hotel is situated on Choeng Mon Beach surrounded by other hotels and resorts, as well as restaurants and bars. The hotel provides shuttle service to local places for a fee. It's a 10-minute drive to the island's iconic Big Buddha, and about five minutes farther to the buzz around the Fisherman's Village. Those looking to party will need to head to Chaweng, which will take 15 to 20 minutes to reach by car. The Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations are about 40 minutes away by car. The airport is near Chaweng, and will take a little less time to reach than the town, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Mostly modern Thai-style rooms, some created from old barges, with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges

Rooms here are attractive and simple, with modern, mostly plain decor that has a few Thai accents. Some were created from old wooden boats and have a little more charm and character, with wooden floors and paneled walls. The others have generic, clean-lined furniture alongside flourished details like dramatic wall-hung lamps and Thai-inspired headboards. All come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, mini-fridges, and safes. Bathrooms are lovely, and feature hairdryers, toiletries, and robes and slippers. Most have separate showers and tubs. Suites have sitting areas with sofas and chairs. All rooms have a furnished balcony or terrace with views of the beautiful tropical gardens. We did spot a little bit of wear and some rooms do need a bit of a refresh, but for the most part these are quality rooms that are fine to rest and recharge.

Features

On-site restaurant and bar, outdoor pool with bar, wide sandy beach, free snorkel equipment and kayaks, spa, events space, free Wi-Fi

The open-air restaurant by the beach serves all meals, including a breakfast buffet.  The large boat-shaped outdoor pool features canons and elephants that spray water into the pool. It overlooks the wide sandy beach where more chairs and umbrellas are available for guests who want to relax. Active ones can use the free snorkel equipment and kayaks. A small spa offers massage treatments and a whirlpool tub. Events space accommodates gatherings, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
