The nine-room, mid-range Hotel Ca'
Dogaressa is a tiny, family-run hotel overlooking the Cannaregio Canal in
northwest Venice. The location is great for arriving by train or vaporetto, though
the main tourist center is about a half an hour away, whether on foot or by water taxi. Interiors, especially in
the rooms, are superbly finished in the typical classical style, and amenities
are more than adequate -- though lack of an elevator is inconvenient. The
rooftop terrace is a real bonus and laptop loan is an unusual perk for these prices. Overall, for the standard and size of rooms alone, the Ca’ Dogaressa’s
prices represent great value for money.
Scene
Intimate, family-run hotel with classical Venetian interiors
The Hotel Ca'
Dogaressa is housed in an old -- but far from ancient-looking -- red brick building
overlooking a wide canal-front walkway which runs by one of the Venice's
larger waterways. The Antenori family who own and run the hotel have decked
out interiors in the typical and traditional manner of classical 18th century
Venice, with terrazzo floors, gilt-framed mirrors, and elegant Murano glass
light fittings -- all with a little more panache than most similar hotels.
The mood is intimate and welcoming, with a personal touch one might expect of
a small family-run guesthouse. Some original architectural features such as
wooden beams are present throughout most of the building, while an ornate
wrought iron balustrade leads up its three floors to a rooftop terrace with
superb views of the picturesque surroundings.
Location
Overlooking Cannaregio canal, 10 minutes' walk from the train station
The hotel is
located in the Cannaregio district in northwest Venice overlooking the Cannaregio
canal. It's a popular and bustling area, but away from most of the tourist
crowds and very easily accessible from the train terminal, Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia, about a 10 minutes'
walk away. The hotel is also a few minutes' walk from the Guglie water taxi stop with no bridges to cross, so it's very convenient for
those arriving by water. It is a bit of a way from the main tourist attractions
-- San Marco Square is about 25 to 30 minutes away on foot, or the same by
water taxi -- though the pretty Venetian Ghetto area can be found just round the
corner, about a five minutes' walk.
Rooms
Classically elegant decor with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi
The hotel has
just nine rooms, some of which are in an apartment in a separate annex. Each is superbly
finished in the classically ornate style of 18th century Venice with brocade
wallpaper, extravagantly styled white antique furnishings, and Murano glass
chandeliers. All rooms have air-conditioning
and heating, while amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Classic rooms have green and white checkerboard bathroom tile, and shower/tub combos. Issues have been reported with sound insulation between rooms, and guests should be aware that some of the apartment accommodation involves a shared bathroom.
Features
Rooftop terrace overlooking canal and free laptop loan
Breakfast is not
generally included in the rate, and the hotel's breakfast room is tiny, but
there is a wonderful rooftop terrace overlooking the canal where guests can
eat. Breakfast can also be served in-room if requested. Unusually for a hotel
of this level, guests can also ask for a laptop to be brought to the room, and free
Wi-Fi is available throughout.
