Bottom Line

The Pensione La Calcina is a mid-range hotel with 27 rooms that offers a quiet retreat away from Venice’s main
tourist area. Set in a historic building, the hotel has belonged
to the same family for three generations and they take pride in its heritage.
The decor is classical and traditional, without the opulence and garish color
schemes common in some hotels in Venice. Rooms are no-frills and homey; many have great lagoon views. There’s a water-side terrace and a scenic rooftop terrace here, as well as an
excellent restaurant and bar. For those who don’t mind a longer stroll into the
center, the Pensione La Calcina offers great value.

Scene

A traditional, serene, historic hotel

The
Pensione La Calcina is set in a 17th century building that was originally a limestone
warehouse, before becoming an inn and then a guest house. It mainly appeals to
couples and singles who want a traditional hotel in a peaceful location. The attractive peach-colored building has green awnings, smart wooden
shutters, and window boxes on the wrought iron balconies. Inside, there’s a
wealth of historic artifacts from furniture to artwork and old photographs,
which the current owners have restored and preserved. This hotel has lots of character and the atmosphere is peaceful.

Location

Just out of the main tourist area, but near museums and art galleries

This hotel is located in the Dorsoduro neighborhood,
where there are several museums and art galleries -- the renowned Peggy Guggenheim
Museum and Accademia Gallery are both within a five-minute walk. On a pretty
promenade and overlooking one of Venice's most attractive waterways, the
Pensione La Calcina is in a very scenic spot. It’s peaceful too, being set away
from the constant crowds in the San Marco area. The flip side is that the major
sights of Venice are further away. The Rialto Bridge, the Bridge of Sighs, and
St Mark’s Square are around 15- to 20-minutes away on foot. There are lots of good
restaurants in the hotel’s neighborhood though, and it’s also convenient for
the Zattere water bus stop which is just a
minute’s walk.

Rooms

Classically decorated rooms, some with great water views

The rooms are all individually furnished and have charming Italian decor, with beautiful polished parquet flooring and antique furniture (though some elements, such as patterned bedspreads, are on the dated side). Most have more than one large wooden-framed window and there are views of the Church of the Redeemer and the Giudecca Canal from many rooms. Rooms are lit by elegant chandeliers and the walls are painted a soft cream. Each room comes equipped with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, air-conditioning, a hairdryer, a safe, minibar, and desk. Room service is available during limited hours. Bathrooms are fairly basic and functional with plain white tiling, but some are quite cramped.

Features

A good bar and restaurant, and plenty of outside space with stunning views

The hotel has many points from which to take in the stunning views -- there’s a terrace on the promenade, a roof terrace with
panoramic views, and even the restaurant has large windows overlooking the
water. The La
Piscina restaurant serves traditional Venetian and Mediterranean dishes and a
good selection of Italian wines. The food is of good quality, and the menu is
more imaginative and original than many places on the tourist trail. There’s
also a bar which is open day and evening serving homemade cakes, fresh fruit
salads, and other snacks as well as hot and cold drinks. It’s an elegant space with flock-print velvet armchairs and a grand, ornate fireplace.
A buffet breakfast is included in the room rate, and offers fresh and good
quality food. It can be served in the room or at either of the hotel’s
terraces. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
