Bottom Line

The Austria Trend Hotel Europa Wien has technically been open for over a century, although it was destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt. Rooms have simple, streamlined modern decor, and pets are allowed. Wi-Fi is free but there's a fee for the breakfast buffet. The hotel is located right at Karntner Strasse, Vienna’s most popular shopping and pedestrian area, making it easily accessible to shops and restaurants, and while this location is suitable for tourists and business travelers, those in need of conference facilities may want to look elsewhere.

Scene

Historic hotel with modern, elegant appeal

The hotel was built in 1896 and was originally called Hotel Meissl & Schadn. Back in its early days, it was an elegant hotel that noble citizens and land owners often stayed in. It was destroyed at the end of World War II and subsequently rebuilt and renamed Hotel Europa in the 1950s. The hotel has been updated several times since and is now a modern, clean, and understatedly chic building. The lobby is sleek with marble floors, a granite front desk, and floor-to-ceiling mirrored walls. Hallways feature large-scale abstract paintings in bold colors. Its central location and lack of meeting facilities means that most of the guests here are tourists. Pets are welcome.

Location

Conveniently situated near shopping, famous attractions, and public transportation

The hotel is located right at Karntner Strasse, Vienna’s most popular shopping and pedestrian area. Plenty of high-end stores, restaurants, and bars are all within walking distance. It’s prime location is just five-minutes away on foot from Stephansplatz, a square at the center of Vienna, and the adjacent St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Hofburg Palace, home to the President of Austria, is about 10-minutes away on foot. Public transportation is easily accessible and the hotel is just under 40 minutes by car or bus from the Vienna Airport.

Rooms

Modern rooms with simple decor and free Wi-Fi

Each of the 160 modern rooms and suites at the hotel has a desk, a bed, a small table, chairs, and a closet, as well as a piece of modern art or two on the walls. Most rooms have solid blue or grey patterned carpets, although Superior Executive Rooms have hardwood floors. The comfortable beds come with a variety of pillow choices: cuddly, neck support, or natural fiber. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Executive Rooms come with a voucher for a welcome drink, nonalcoholic drinks, and bedtime candy, as well as early check-in or late check-out. Bathrooms are snug and come with shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and black granite countertops.

Features

Buffet breakfast and on-site lounge bar with good people-watching opportunities

A buffet breakfast is served in the sleek breakfast room, although it's not included in room rates. The spread includes regional and organic breads, pastries, eggs, and coffee. Gluten-free and lactose-free products are available on request. The elegant Europa Bar serves coffee, snacks, and desserts along a wide selection of beer, wine, and spirits. The bar's floor-to-ceiling windows look out on Stephansplatz, making it an ideal vantage point for people-watching. One corner of the room has a flat-screen TV and a printer, making it a de facto business area in this hotel that lacks meeting rooms. Although there's no gym, a detailed jogging map of local paths of varying lengths is available at the front desk.
