Bottom Line

Less than a 10-minute walk from Vienna’s most popular attractions, Opera Suites is a mid-range hotel with traditional decor. The hotel has 18 rooms and apartments decked out in a classic Viennese style and all come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and Nespresso makers; apartments add kitchens. However, some don't have very good views, while others get street noise. Breakfast is available (in-room only) for a fee and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but otherwise there's not much in terms of features. The Old World look might not appeal to all, either, as it can come off as dusty or dated. Travelers looking for a more modern experience should check out the centrally located Austria Trend Hotel Europa Wien, which has its own bar.

Scene

Mid-range property with traditional Viennese style but limited public spaces

Accommodations at this Old World property are divided between two buildings -- a townhouse holds the guest rooms and a second building houses the lobby and apartments. Both aim for a traditional, gilded elegance with a maroon-and-gold color scheme, ornate floral prints, chandeliers, striped wallpaper, and antique-style furniture. Still, this traditional Viennese style can read as old-fashioned or stuffy to some. There are not many public spaces -- not even a breakfast room -- however, there are a few seating areas with Louis XV chairs and couches, a small library, a public desktop computer, and a tray with coffee and water on offer. Most guests are vacationing couples who want a central location and an old European look.

Location

Close to major shopping streets, attractions, public transportation, and restaurants

Opera Suites is located on the middle of Kartnerstrasse, a popular shopping street filled with restaurants and bars, in between the Vienna State Opera and a casino. Most attractions are within walking distance: Hofburg Palace is an eight-minute walk away, while St. Stephen’s Cathedral takes seven minutes to reach on foot. The Belvedere Palace is a 22-minute walk away. The nearest tram stop is a three-minute walk from the property, while the nearest metro takes five minutes to reach. It’s a 21-minute drive to the Vienna International Airport.

Rooms

Traditional rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, AC, and Nespresso coffeemakers

The overall look in rooms is classically Viennese, with gold-striped wallpaper, maroon carpet and curtains, chandeliers, and chairs or couches upholstered with faded red fabric. It may feel a bit dated and old-fashioned to some, despite the fact that the rooms were renovated in 2014. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, air-conditioning, kettles, safes, and Nespresso coffeemakers. Some Superior Double Suites have kitchenettes and sofa beds. The hotel also offers apartments in a separate building with kitchens, washing machines, and living rooms, and some have terraces. However, housekeeping is only offered every other day in these units. All bathrooms are modern, though vary in size, and include walk-in showers, hairdryers, and toiletries. Apartment bathrooms have shower/tub combos. Views are either of the street or courtyard, and rooms at the front of the hotel get some street noise.

Features

Limited breakfast delivered to rooms (for a fee), plus public computer and free Wi-Fi

As a small-scale, historical property, Opera Suites has limited features. Each morning, a small breakfast of cold items including boiled eggs, pastries, cold cuts, and cheeses can be delivered to rooms, for a fee, but there’s no breakfast room, full restaurant, or bar on-site. The lobby area has a public desktop and a small library of books. A station offering coffee and bottled water is set up for guests here. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Note that there’s no on-site parking.
