Bottom Line

Tourotel Mariahilf is a modest two-and-a-half-pearl hotel with budget-friendly rates. Its 65 rooms are spacious but dated, with tube TVs in some but no Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, or tea/coffee facilities. Meeting rooms and a breakfast buffet are the only two prominent features at this hotel, beyond the free Wi-Fi that can only be accessed in the lobby. Though it’s outside of the city center, the property is near shopping and public transportation, and it's within walking distance of Schonbrunn Palace. For a value property squarely in the city center, travelers might want to consider Hotel Austria, which also includes free Wi-Fi throughout and loaner iPads.

Tourotel Mariahilf

Scene

Budget-friendly hotel with a mix of modern and traditional style

Set in a building from the 19th-century, Tourotel Mariahilf is a budget-friendly hotel that attracts undemanding travelers who simply need a place to sleep and are unconcerned with decor or features. A new owner took over the property in 2015 and has been slowly renovating the place here and there, with plans to build a beer garden and wine bar adjacent to the lobby. Some spaces are modern and newly renovated, while others maintain a classic style with outdated furnishings. The lobby features traditional decor, with lovely crown molded ceilings, chandeliers, potted plants, and a wooden front desk, as well as dated seating areas with faded green carpets and red armchairs. There’s a number of Gustav Klimt prints throughout. By contrast, the breakfast room is sleek and contemporary, with gray tiled floors, exposed pipes, dark wooden chairs, and sleek white tables.

Location

Within walking distance of shopping, Schonbrunn Palace, and public transportation

Though Tourotel Mariahilf is a bit far from Vienna’s most popular attractions, it’s well connected to local transportation. It’s just a seven-minute walk to the Westbahnhof station, where guests can grab a train, tram, or bus. The property is on the popular Mariahilferstrasse, Vienna’s longest and most popular shopping street filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes. Schonbrunn Palace is a 25-minute walk away, while the Haus des Meeres-Aqua Terra Zoo, a local aquarium, takes 20 minutes to reach on foot. It’s a 30-minute drive or taxi ride to Vienna International Airport.

Rooms

Dated rooms with TVs (some are flat-screen), but no air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, or coffeemakers

Rooms at Tourotel Hariahilf are all traditionally styled, with parquet floors, intricate molded ceilings, and chandeliers or hanging lamps. However, it’s the outdated art pieces, faded armchairs and bed skirts, old furniture, and tube TVs that make these rooms feel dated and in need of a makeover, especially compared to some of the modern areas of the property. Limited amenities include TVs (only some are flat-screen) with German channels and desks, plus some have small balconies. Suites have separate living rooms with couches. Rooms lack air-conditioning, minibars, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are clean and relatively contemporary, with shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries in wall dispensers.
