Quinta Pedra Dos Bicos

Check-in at the Quinta Pedra dos Bicos is to the rear of its sister property -- Aqua Pedra dos Bicos Hotel -- which is easy to spot with its distinctive, sweeping facade finished in brick-red. Set opposite and lining several of the the surrounding roads are the various two-, three-, and four-story blocks that comprise the Quinta's 60-apartment complex. Traditional Portuguese tiling, ornate wrought-iron balconies, and typical terra-cotta tiled roofs give these buildings a slightly rustic, farm-like feel. While not extensive, there are some pleasant green areas and well-tended gardens that surround the property's two swimming pools. The Quinta Pedra dos Bicos has a friendly community atmosphere that attracts mostly families with kids, though vacationing couples looking for a quiet, home-like vibe can also be found here.

The complex sits along a low cliff overlooking the lovely Praia da Oura beach on the eastern outskirts of the popular resort of Albufeira in southern Algarve. While the immediate surroundings feel largely residential, there's still plenty within walking distance, including the renowned "Strip" of lively bars and clubs, which is a 10-minute walk away. The beach is about a five- to 10-minute walk down almost 100 wooden steps, so the climb back up might be a struggle for some. There's also a large supermarket just around the corner for picking up groceries. The pretty whitewashed facades of Albufeira's Old Town center are a five- to 10-minute cab journey, while Faro Airport is about a 35-minute drive from the hotel.

Apartments are decorated with colorful fabrics, wooden furnishings, and white-tile floors -- though the style is a bit dated, the spaces are pleasant. All units have kitchens with four-person wooden dining tables and simple cooking facilities that consist of electric hobs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and kettles. Separate or connected lounge areas have couches and flat-screen TVs. Though not all studios have outdoor spaces, all one- and two-bedroom apartments open to furnished balconies or terraces -- some overlooking the pool and a few even offering glimpses of the sea. Bathrooms are generally clean and functional, with basic toiletries, wall-mounted hairdryers, and shower/tub combos. Wi-Fi is free of charge, though it can be temperamental and is limited to two devices.

The complex has two swimming pool areas, one with Roman-style columns and a kids’ splash pool, and a second with a smaller and quieter square-shaped pool. They are each surrounded by plastic loungers and the main pool additionally has straw umbrellas. There's not much else in the way of leisure or spa facilities, though children can use a small playground with swings and an inflatable. Wi-Fi is free, but spotty, throughout the property, and there's a one-computer internet corner in the lobby.A small buffet breakfast of hot and cold items is served at a bright and colorful poolside bar, which extends to a terrace area (though breakfast is not included as standard). The poolside bar also serves snacks and drinks during the day. Guests have access to the sister hotel's Restaurante Serenata, offering a range of a la carte and buffet options in contemporary surrounds. It also offers a swish lounge bar with live piano music. Half-board options are available.
