Bottom Line

Centrally located in Torremolinos, Arcos de Montemar is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel offering 51 dated but sufficient guest rooms. All rooms are decorated the same and have air-conditioning, reliable free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs, but the mini-fridges and safes are only available for rent. Also note that not all have balconies. The small hotel doesn't offer much in the way of on-site amenities, but there are a small outdoor pool, buffet restaurant serving free breakfast, and a bar. The beach is a quick five-minute walk away, as are bus stops for transport to nearby cities. Travelers looking for a bit more features may prefer the beachfront Hotel Pez Espada.

Scene

Small family-run hotel with mix of contemporary and dated furnishings

The Arcos de Montemar is a family-run property occupying a whitewashed building with tiled roofing. The road-facing balconies give the building some charm and color, as each has dark-green double doors and wrought-iron railings painted the same color. Inside, there's a mix of dated and contemporary furnishings; the lobby has pristine white-marble floors, a recessed ceiling, and glass coffee tables, as well as frumpy brown-leather sofas and wood banisters. The latter decor carries into the carved-wood bar, with the same couches and oddly, Egyptian artwork. The buffet restaurant has simple wooden tables topped with pink tablecloths. The outdoor terrace with modern wicker furniture and ivy-laden stone walls, and the outdoor pool are the more attractive spaces. Guests are largely couples, but families and solo travelers also make their way here.

Location

Situated on a somewhat noisy street, close to the beach and restaurants

The location of Arcos de Montemar is central and convenient, as guests are a five-minute walk to the beach and near ample restaurants and bars. A bus stop for transport to nearby cities is a 12-minute walk away. Guests are a 17-minute drive from the Malaga Airport. The aquarium, Sea Life Benalmadena, is a 20-minute walk or a quick four-minute car/taxi ride.

Rooms

Room decor is a bit dated, but they are spacious and clean

Arcos de Montemar offers a variety of room styles, including some that are fit for larger groups or families. The rooms are comfortably sized and clean, but the decor may leave something to be desired. Decorated identically, rooms have terra-cotta floors, classic wood furniture showing a bit of wear, tired yellow-and-blue-striped bedding, and similar window treatments. Framed floral prints are old-fashioned but give the rooms a homey touch. Amenities include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and a well-sized flat-screen TV, but guests have to pay to use the mini-fridges and safes. Bathrooms are on the small side and outfitted with curtained shower/tub combos, bidets, and a few free bath products. There are no hairdryers or kettles provided. Many guest rooms have a small furnished balcony, but not all. Note that some guests have complained about street noise in front-facing rooms.

Features

Alfresco dining, a small pool, and free Wi-Fi

The small hotel only offers minimal on-site features, few of which will entertain kids. Arcos de Montemar has a well-maintained, albeit small, outdoor pool that catches a good amount of sun. It's surrounded by loungers and a grassy lawn, but is only open during the summer months. A gym is not available. All rates include a well-reviewed breakfast buffet, and guests can purchase a half-board option for the buffet dinner. The bar is open late and has an outdoor terrace. There is free and reliable Wi-Fi throughout.
