Bottom Line

The 95-room Gran Hotel Benahavis is an upper-middle-range property with dated decor but a lovely, peaceful location. Guests are a 10-minute uphill walk to the town center's restaurants and shops, and a 17-minute drive to the beach. Old-fashioned furnishings, a patio fountain, and green garden grounds are lovely, but with evident wear and tear, and occasional maintenance issues, the hotel could use an update. Nevertheless, rooms are spacious and come with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs, plus some have furnished balconies. A range of on-site features includes two swimming pools with kiddy pools, a whirlpool, and spa, plus a small gym, three restaurants (one is seasonal) serving regional fare, and a bar. Food receives mixed reviews. For a beachfront setting, consider Hotel Fuerte Marbella, a more modern and upscale option.

Gran Hotel Benahavís

Scene

Peaceful property with gorgeous garden grounds and old-fashioned style that's largely charming

Gran Hotel Benahavis fits in with its surroundings, featuring clay-tiled roofing, rich dark-wood accents, and several archways. The outdoor red-brick patio is particularly charming, with a pebbled design starting in the four corners and leading to a fountain, wrought-iron dining sets, and topiary. Interiors also retain this classically elegant look, with clouds painted on the lobby ceiling, large chandeliers over sculptures and a piano, and antique-style rugs and tapestries. Unfortunately, while some of these elements continue into the rooms, they aren't nearly as charming, and decor feels more dated than classic. Additionally, many past guests have complained of rooms and public spaces feeling rundown and various maintenance issues. Nevertheless, the peaceful setting amid green hills, lovely outdoor pools, and quick walk to town continue to draw couples seeking a relaxing getaway.

Location

Quiet setting a 10-minute uphill walk to town center

The hotel is set in a quiet, rural location surrounded by green hills makes this a great spot to come and relax. Travelers are a 10-minute uphill walk from The center of Benahavis, where several restaurants, bars, and shops are located. For those wanting a little more excitement, the bustling cities of Marbella and Estepona are both 27-minute drives in opposite directions. The nearest beach is a 17-minute drive. Several golf courses are within a 10- to 15-minute drive. Because there isn't a ton within easy walking distance, most past guests suggest renting a car or being prepared to spend money on taxis. Malaga Airport is an hour's drive away.

Rooms

Spacious and comfy rooms with some dated decor and evident wear

Guest rooms aren't quite as classically elegant as public spaces, instead done in a subdued, old-fashioned style that may feel more dated than charming to some. Also on the downside, they have visible wear and tear, and occasional maintenance issues are present. Also be aware that while some units have well-sized terraces with furniture, some lack outdoor spaces or only have bare Juliet-style balconies. Expect traditional wood furniture, linens in earth tones -- many with floral designs, beige tiling, and still life artwork. On the plus side, rooms are spacious and all come with desks, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, wardrobes, and mini-fridges. Straightforward, neutral-tone bathrooms have shower/tub combos, some of which are jetted. Toiletries, hairdryers, and bidets come standard.

Features

Multiple pools, spa facilities, and three restaurants

Gran Hotel Benahavis has several amenities geared toward relaxation. Firstly, the lovely green grounds are dotted by two well-sized pools. One has a hot tub and there are two kiddy pools. Several loungers surround the pools, but there are a limited number of straw umbrellas for shade. Another pool and whirlpool can be found at the spa, though it requires a fee and swim cap (sold on-site) to access. The spa also offers a range of massage and wellness treatments, and a sauna. A small gym is available, with a handful of cardio and strength-training equipment. A five-a-side football pitch and billiards are also on the property.

There are three restaurants on-site, one of which is a seasonal spot located on an outdoor terrace. The others include a more formal Andalusian restaurant and a casual eatery serving buffet breakfasts, which receives some complaints for lukewarm fare. Food in general receives mixed reviews. A bar is also on-site.

Wi-Fi is free.
