Bottom Line

This massive upper-middle-range Marriott property, housed in a high-rise, makes for a convenient base in downtown Atlanta for travelers who don't mind the impersonal nature of a large chain. It's about a 15-minute walk to attractions like the Georgia Aquarium and CNN Center. The 1663 guest rooms come in a wide selection of categories, including ones with modern air purification systems. A hotel of this size means that there are plenty of features, including an indoor/outdoor pool, fitness and spa facilities, extensive meeting space, and a couple of dining options and bars, such as a steakhouse and Starbucks. Parking is pricey though, as is breakfast, but Wi-Fi is free. For something on a smaller scale that's more personal, check out the nearby Ellis Hotel, a historic boutique on Peachtree Street.

Oyster Hotel Review

Atlanta Marriott Marquis

Scene

Large upper-middle-range contemporary chain hotel in a high-rise

This massive hotel (1663 rooms) is situated in a high-rise and features a standard Marriott look and bustling atmosphere. The lobby is a sprawling space that's a flurry of escalators and guest check-in activity. Though generic decor-wise, it's got a dizzying, futuristic feel due to the cavernous space towering above formed by interior hallways stacking up to the atrium roof. Glass elevators shuttle up to rooms, though they can be slow. The hotel's handful of dining venues and bars are sleek and contemporary, with a character-less kind of style that's typically chainlike. They're clean and pleasant though.

The property attracts a varied clientele, including tourists visiting the city, families with kids, business travelers, and large groups, plus it's a popular venue for meetings and events. It does a good job catering to a varied group, but it's a large chain hotel with an impersonal vibe that won't suit all.

Location

Prime downtown location a 15-minute walk to the Georgia Aquarium

The hotel occupies a convenient downtown location in the city's central business district. There are lots of dining options (Hooters, Benihana, Hard Rock Cafe) in the area, as well as many other hotels (the property is across the street from both a Hilton and a Hyatt Regency). The Georgia Aquarium is a 15-minute walk away, while Centennial Olympic Park is 11 minutes away on foot. Other attractions that are within a 10-minute walk include the Children's Museum of Atlanta and World of Coca-Cola. The CNN Center is an 18-minute walk. The Georgia World Congress Center can be reached on foot in 20 minutes or it's a six-minute drive. The airport is about a 15-minute drive, but can take much longer depending on traffic (up to 40 minutes); the metro offers a good alternative and takes under a half-hour. The nearest metro stop, Peachtree Center, is a seven-minute walk away.
