Furama Villas & Spa Ubud

In much of Bali's developed southern regions, feeling like you're away from it all is actually a feat to accomplish. We've stayed in plenty of properties touting quiet and tranquillity only to be woken up by blaring traffic in the morning, and chronic construction all day long. On its commitment to serenity alone, the Furama Villas & Spa Ubud delivers. First impressions are likewise great. Guests are greeted with traditional flower offerings and cold drinks as they check-in in the hotel's breezy reception area. It all feels very exclusive and Balinese. Public spaces all have a similar open-air feel, with pops of purple, white, and hardwood seen throughout. Glimpses of the quiet countryside can be seen from almost any vantage, including Padi restaurant -- with its lovely views across the tropical landscape. The villas are a little tired, so expectations will need to be managed -- they're a bit nicer in the FuramaXclusive part of the development. Otherwise, this can be a pleasant place for couples and families to unwind for a few days in peace. 

If you're here you're essentially in the middle of nowhere, which is precisely the point. The hotel is tucked down a long road, at the end of a private driveway within a traditional village. Villagers are employed by the resort, and produce from the village farms is used in the restaurants when possible. There are just one or two local shops along the road -- we spotted Furama guests kicking back cheap beers at the tables set up outside these venues during our visit. Otherwise, you'll need to rely on the hotel's shuttle and cabs to get around. The shuttle runs into Ubud five times per day, but stops early, so if you're going into town for dinner or a show, you'll be footing the bill for a cab to get home. It's about a 25-minute drive, but can vary depending on traffic in the center of town. Budget at least 60 minutes to reach the airport south of Kuta, though if you're smart you'll give it two hours, as traffic in this part of Bali is often horrible.

For travelers seeking a private retreat in the tropics, the villas here might fit the bill. Each is separated by high walls, with heavy entry gates that give them an exclusive vibe. The pretty gardens in each only enhance the tropical vibes. For the most part, villas are pleasant, though both categories that are part of the Furama Villas & Spa portion of the resort look tired. Expect antique-inspired furniture, jute ceilings, and old-school Balinese art on the walls. The terrazzo patterned floors don't do much to update the look, and we did spot tube TVs in some of the units. Royal Pool Villas share similar decor, but include two separate villas that make them a better option for families. All include private pools, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, televisions (flat-screen and tube units), DVD players, phones, electric kettles, minibars, and outdoor living areas.  Some feature massage tables for private treatments. Bathrooms are massive in all villas and include separate soaking tubs and showers, plus huge dressing areas and vanities. Towels and toiletries are provided. 

The features at this resort aren't too extensive, but everything on offer is geared toward a relaxing escape. All are shared with guests staying at the FuramaXclusive resort that's also part of the compound. As each pool in the Furama Villas side of the property has its own pool, the one common pool is perhaps superfluous, though we still spotted some guests splashing around there on our visit. There are multiple relaxed bars throughout the resort, and the main restaurant -- Padi -- serves Indonesian and international fare alongside lovely views across the countryside and resort. Breakfast isn't included in rates, but is a decent buffet spread. The spa is small -- with only four treatment rooms -- though they open to views across the landscape that enhance the experience. A free shuttle runs into Ubud five times a day, though it stops in the early evening, meaning you'll have to shell out for a cab home after dinner, drinks, or a show. The resort offers a good number of activities, including morning bicycle tours and other cultural opportunities, though all come with fees. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
