Bottom Line

Situated on a quiet stretch of sand north of Kuta, the upper-middle-range Grand Balisani Suites is a quintessentially Balinese property featuring beautiful wood-and-thatch interiors and a calm atmosphere. The 90 rooms here range from simple, somewhat dated Deluxe units with sea views from the top floors along to Garden Suites with huge marble bathrooms to villas with their own private plunge pools. Facilities include a lovely pool with a swim-up bar, a restaurant offering buffet and a la carte options at all three meals, and a small spa, plus a free area shuttle to ferry guests to the busier shopping areas around the island. Overall, it's a great choice for those looking for something quieter, but travelers who prefer a more central location should consider The Royal Beach Seminyak Bali - MGallery Collection instead.

What are the Design and Scene Like at Grand Balisani Suites?

Quiet property with lots of traditional Balinese styling and pleasant outdoor spaces, but no elevators

Built in 1991 and last renovated in 2013, Grand Balisani Suites is a quiet, upper-middle-range beachfront resort dominated by traditional Balinese styling. This 1.8-hectare (4.4 acres) property incorporates lots of dark wood and thatch, as well as simple earth-tone fabrics and large paintings. Grounds are particularly pleasant, thanks to meandering pathways interspersed with koi ponds and a pool. However, there are also plenty of stairs, and the lack of elevators might put some travelers off. While the property gets some families, most travelers are couples looking for a property within easy reach of the bustling tourist center.

Where is Grand Balisani Suites Located?

Relaxed beachfront location north of Kuta and down the beach from Canggu

Grand Balisani Suites is situated right in front of Batu Belig Beach, north of Kuta and south of Canggu. The area is relatively quiet, though there are several restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. Getting to Kuta can take anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour depending on traffic, while Canguu is about a 20-minute drive away. Travelers can also get to Canggu by walking up the beach for half an hour or so; just be advised that doing so requires crossing a couple of inlets that can fill up quickly with seawater during high tide. Farther afield, it's about a 40-minute drive to the famous sea-facing Tanah Lot Temple, and an hour to Ubud. Getting to Ngurah Rai International Airport takes about 40 minutes by car, but the journey can take considerably longer during periods of peak traffic so it's a good idea to give yourself extra time just in case.

What are Rooms Like at Grand Balisani Suites?

Large rooms, suites, and villas with tile floors, balconies or terraces, and Balinese touches

Rooms here are spread across four categories: entry-level Deluxe Garden Views (on the first three floors), identical-except-for-the-views Deluxe Sea Views (on the fourth floor), gorgeous Garden Suites, and Villas with their own private outdoor pools. Deluxe Rooms measure 34 square meters (370 square feet) and come with either one queen bed or two twins; Garden View units also have connecting options. These rooms all feature a simple, somewhat dated design with Balinese accents -- think simple wood furniture and coordinating wood carvings on the walls, beige tile floors, and cream-colored walls with wood trim and recessed lighting. Balconies and terraces with furniture come standard, as do small flat-screen TVs with DVD players, minibars, safes, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are attractive and outfitted with walk-in showers, basic toiletries, and hairdryers.

Garden Suites clock in at around 80 square meters (861 square feet) and have a more contemporary and flourished decor scheme, with the addition of lovely canopy beds, decorative carved benches, and particularly stand-out bathrooms with marble columns, huge soaking tubs in addition to large walk-in showers, and lovely outdoor sitting areas with gazebos (in ground-floor units) or balconies. In many ways, the Garden Suites seem more opulent than the three villas, though the villas have their own pools (just note that passersby can see in) and separate stand-alone rooms next to the villas with a twin bed.

What Features are Available at Grand Balisani Suites?

Lovely pool with bar and lounge chairs, restaurant with buffet and a la carte options, a spa, and free area shuttle

Grand Balisani Suites offers a good range of vacation-friendly amenities. The pool sits between the resort building and the beach and features an elevated kids' section, and a covered bar off to one side. There are a few lounge chairs on the wooden deck surrounding the pool, with more situated on a grassy lawn overlooking the beach. The beach itself is separated from the property by a narrow road and there are a few lounge chairs here owned by a third party that guests can rent. However, the waves here are powerful, making it downright dangerous for swimming and only experienced surfers should attempt to surf here.

Dining takes place in the main restaurant, with varied buffets and a la carte options available for all three meals; the evening barbecues get great feedback from past guests. Room service is also available, but only during specific hours. Free shuttles to Seminyak, Kuta, and Sanur are available. There's no gym, but the hotel does have a lower-level spa, offering a treatment room for couples with a big soaking tub. There's also a giant chessboard and a covered outdoor area with a pool table. Off-site activities including bicycling, diving, sailing, and horseback riding can be arranged through the front desk. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, though some past guests have reported connection issues, and there's plenty of free on-site parking.
