Large, spread-out property might pose a challenge to those with limited mobility
The Melia Bali Indonesia is an upscale resort right on the beach on Bali's southeastern coast. The 494 rooms and suites feature elegant, contemporary decor, and have patios or balconies. Several on-site restaurants serve cuisine from around the world, and there's an extensive selection of event spaces for meetings and weddings. The kids' club has activities for children ages four to 12, and while the property is definitely family-friendly, kids are not the main focus here. Guests with lots of young ones in tow may prefer the nearby Club Med, which offers as much (if not more) for kids as it does for adults.
Scene
Beautiful tranquil resort with sprawling grounds and impressive conference facilities
Set on beautiful grounds filled with palm trees, bougainvillea, and lots of lake-like fountains, the Melia Bali has a tranquil ambience. The property is huge (10 hectares, or nearly 25 acres) which means a lot of walking from place to place -- but the upside are the beautiful gardens and the natural feel (we spotted lots of squirrels and water birds during our visit). Facilities are connected by long stone patios, and while there are elevators, overall the resort might pose a challenge to those with limited mobility. The lobby is a large, opulent space, with marble floors, statues of elephants, and long wooden columns leading to a pastel-hued frescoed ceiling.
Though the resort draws mostly couples here on leisure, plenty of families stay too and the impressive conference facilities make it a hub for business events. In the past, the hotel has hosted important functions, such as one for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, and has even hosted Indonesia's president.
Location
On a quiet stretch of Bali's southeastern coast, with little within walking distance
The Melia Bali Indonesia is located on a quiet stretch of Bali's southeastern coast, in an area dominated by other high-end hotels. There's not much within walking distance, but it's a 25-minute drive to the town of Kuta and getting to Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park takes about the same amount of time. The Uluwatu Temple is about a 40-minute drive. It's a 20-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, and Ubud is about an hour away.
Rooms
Air-conditioned rooms, suites, and villas with elegant furnishings and big patios
The Melia offers a great deal of variety in its 494 rooms and suites, all of which have patios or terraces, air-conditioning, kettles and coffeemakers, minibars, and safes. Rooms range from single and double Melia Guestrooms to a single Executive Suite. There are also 10 Garden Villas set in their own private section of the property, each with a private plunge pool. Decor is sleek and contemporary, with a mix of Scandinavian-style furniture and locally inspired artwork and decor. Many of the rooms and villas have exposed-wooden ceilings, wooden wall trim, and wooden floors. Marble bathrooms have wall-mounted hairdryers, and while most have shower/tub combos, the villas have large tubs and separate outdoor showers.
Features
Pool, beach, multiple restaurants, meeting venues, weddings, family-friendly activities, and spa
The Melia offers a variety of entertainment options and activities, including yoga lessons, water basketball, beach sports, and cultural activities raging from cooking classes to temple visits. There's also a spa -- Yhi -- with 10 treatment rooms, outside massage gazebos by the pool, in the garden, or right on the beach, hydro massage, a beauty salon, and in-room spa services. A fully-equipped fitness center is also located on-site.
One of the prettiest on-site amenities is the enormous lagoon-style swimming pool that meanders throughout the grounds and is surrounded by lounge chairs -- many with parasol shading -- and lots of lush trees and shrubs. The resort is separated from the beach by a row of tall trees that provide some natural shade over rows of lounge chairs.
Along with free Wi-Fi, there's a wide rage of meeting rooms and conference spaces, the largest of which can accommodate up to 400 guests, cocktail or theater style. Wedding planning services are also available. The resort offers a lot for families traveling with small children, and their kids' club includes activities that range from fish feeding to kids' nights out (ages four to 12 are accommodated). For guests arriving too early for check in or for those with late flights out, the resort offers an Arrival and Departure Lounge with changing areas, showers, a TV, free beverages, and access to resort facilities.
All-Inclusive / Food
A 24-hour coffee shop, Asian fine dining, a Mediterranean a la carte restaurant, and optional all-inclusive package
There are six bars and restaurants at the Melia, including the 24-hour El Patio Coffee Shop, where a buffet breakfast and a la carte lunch and dinner choices are served daily. There's also a lobby bar with cocktails, snacks, and ice cream -- it stays open late and hosts a daily happy hour. Sateria Beachside Restuarant offers grills, themed buffet dinners, and tapas, and has a pizza happy hour and a tapas bar happy hour every day. Lotus Asian Garden Restaurant is open for dinner and offers cuisine from across Southeast Asia, while Sakura Japanese Restaurant -- also open only for dinner -- serves sashimi, sushi, and teppanyaki. Sorrento Spanish Restaurant offers Spanish cuisine and tapas for dinner every day, and has a mix of indoor and outdoor seating. All-inclusive packages with free meals, drinks, entertainment, non-motorized water sports, and minibar snacks are also available.
