Bottom Line

The Hotel Sant Agusti is a modern mid-range hotel in the El Raval neighborhood of Barcelona, on the other side of Las Ramblas from the Gothic Quarter. Housed in a former convent built for Sant Agustí in 1720, the hotel has a quiet, minimalist style and retains original architectural elements such as wide stone archways. Guest rooms are simple and a bit stark, but they all have flat-screen TVs and plenty of light; some are large enough for groups of six, and others have balconies facing Sant Agusti square. A free continental breakfast is served in the on-site restaurant, which has a lovely terrace on the street. While the hotel offers few standout features, its location makes its a great choice for tourists. Guests seeking a sleeker, more modern aesthetic could try the similarly priced Hesperia Ramblas, which is nearby.

Scene

Converted convent with modern minimalist style

The hotel was built in 1720 as a convent for Sant Agustí and remained as such for 120 years before it was converted into a hotel. Following multiple renovations over the years, it has a soothing, natural aesthetic that combines warm woods and minimalist furnishings with gorgeous original stone walls and archways. In the lobby, beige couches and wood coffee tables are set against tall windows looking out onto the street. Understated sconces and chandeliers lend a golden glow to the beautiful cream-colored stone, wood floors, and a small statue of the hotel's namesake. The breakfast patio area is cheerful and cozy, with simple wood-slated tables and chairs, while a larger outdoor terrace has simple black furniture. The restaurant also makes use of stone and wood, while the bar area has black couches and a small wood bar with liquor bottles tucked neatly away in black shelving.

Location

In El Raval off Las Ramblas

The hotel is located in Barcelona's El Raval neighborhood, in an area with lots of cafes, bars, and shops. It's just a few minutes' walk from Las Ramblas, a boulevard filled with cultural and historic sights, and La Boqueria market is also just a few minutes' walk away. Plaza de Catalunya is a 10-minute walk, and the harbor and Maremagnum shopping center can be reached in about 15 to 20 minutes on foot. The Liceu metro is also just a two-minute walk from the hotel. The airport is 15 to 30 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Simple but bright; some with balconies overlooking the square

Options include Standards, Triples, and Quadruples. Family Rooms can fit up to six people, and have two separate rooms with private bathrooms. All have a pared-down look with wood floors and natural, almost unfinished-looking wood furnishings. Bedding and paint colors vary, from stripes to serene grays to brighter navy. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, small flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, air-conditioning, and safes (for a fee). Some rooms have balconies overlooking Sant Agusti Square. Superior Rooms are located in the attic, and have lovely exposed beams, huge skylights with views of the surrounding area, and more modern, earth-toned decor.

Features

Free breakfast and Wi-Fi, and a great location

The hotel's convenient location is its standout feature -- guests are just a few minutes' stroll from plenty of shops, restaurants, and sights. Continental breakfast is free and served in the on-site restaurant in the historical part of the building, which includes an original stone wall from the 1700s. Dinner is also served in the restaurant, and guests can dine at a terrace on the stone sidewalk, or on the breakfast patio, a cute space with a few wood tables. The bar serves cocktails, drinks, and coffee, and is open until midnight. Parking is available 30 yards from the hotel for a fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
