The upper-middle-range Hotel Navarra is an elegant, centrally located boutique hotel with a rich history. Common areas are romantic and far more luxe than the 94 guest rooms, which are simple overall. But they are tidy and equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and kettles. On-site features include a jazz bar, an indoor pool, a sauna, and meeting rooms and while breakfast is available for a fee, there's no proper restaurant for lunch or dinner. The price and amenities are hard to beat, though travelers may also want to consider Hotel Jan Brito, which can be a bit cheaper and has a free breakfast buffet.
Scene
Historic, 17th-century hotel with elegant decor and romantic vibe
Set in a white building, Hotel Navarra has a colonial mansion vibe, with a stone driveway, a charming garden, and an interior maze of corridors that can be confusing to navigate. Public areas are elegant and sophisticated, with a cream, white, and gray color palette. There’s a large spiral staircase that leads into a lobby with a white desk, iron chandeliers, and a column with a female bust. Hallways are filled with quirky artwork, black-and-white photographs, and mirrors. The breakfast room has wooden parquet floors, large curved windows, and dark-brown tables and chairs. It’s simple yet elegant, much like the jazz bar, which features a white bar, black stools, a grand piano, and black tables, chairs, and booths. The historic charm and romantic vibe of the property makes it popular with vacationing couples. Hotel Navarra was originally the site of the private residence of the Consul of the Spanish Province of Navarra in 1600, though the current structure dates to the early 18th century. It’s been many things over the years, even a hotel that welcomed emperors, duchesses, dukes, and famous poets. After WWI, the hotel was temporarily used as the official headquarters of the Belgian Government. Hotel Navarra opened its doors in 1982 and received historic monument status in 1996.
Location
In the city center, within walking distance of attractions, shops, and restaurants
Though Hotel Navarra is located in the city center, it’s a bit tucked away, which keeps it quiet. Still, it's easy to get to most major tourist attractions. The Markt and Belfry take three minutes on foot, and it’s a 10-minute walk to Groeningemuseum and the Church of Our Lady. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and shops on the surrounding streets, and there’s a bus stop a minute's walk away. Ostend-Bruges International Airport is a 35-minute drive from the property.
Rooms
Modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, kettles, and minibars
Guest rooms at this hotel are clean and modern, but quite simple compared to the public spaces, which may be a letdown for some visitors. Gray carpet, off-white walls, brown curtains, and blond-wood, IKEA-like furniture give a basic backdrop. Statement walls with floral wallpaper add a little elegance, but there's little color or decorative flair to brighten the spaces. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, kettles, air-conditioning, and minibars. Family Rooms add sofa beds. Bathrooms are small and simple with white tile and black countertops plus shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries.
Features
Jazz bar, breakfast buffet, indoor pool, gym, sauna, and meeting rooms
The heart of Hotel Navarra’s action is its lively jazz bar -- The Duke -- which offers drinks, light snacks, and an outdoor garden area with chairs and tables. Live musical performances are held twice a week. There’s no on-site restaurant, but the hotel does serve breakfast buffet with hot and cold items including eggs, bacon, and pastries (for a fee). Breakfast room service is also available for a fee. Note that it’s cheaper to book the breakfast when booking online than it is upon arrival. Other hotel features include an indoor heated pool, a gym with some dated cardio and weight equipment, and a sauna, but guests are requested to notify reception before using the sauna. Business features include free hotel-wide Wi-Fi, a business center, and a fully equipped conference room that can be split up into three smaller rooms. Parking is available for a fee in the 30-car parking lot.
