Bottom Line

The mid-range Chelton Hotel is not right in central Brussels, but it's within a 20 minutes' metro ride of most major tourist attractions. Nearby is the verdant Parc du Cinquantenaire (Jubelpark) and the European Parliament, a boon for business travelers. All 50 rooms have wooden desks, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel's biggest draw, besides the convenient location for business travelers, is its spacious roof deck with plenty of seating and nice city views. Note that complaints have been made about the Wi-Fi and how dim some rooms are. The neighborhood has a dozen-odd hotels that offer plenty of alternatives; one is the 10-room Hotel Satellite, just four minutes away on foot. Satellite has similar amenities, plus in-room coffee and tea making facilities.

Chelton Hotel

Scene

Trendy property with roof terrace near European Parliament

The most unique design element at Chelton Hotel is its use of wood pallets, which panel the lobby, hallways, and some of the rooms. It's trendy but also makes these spaces rather dim, though the lobby does have comfortable seating and a small selection of magazines to entice you to spread out. Fortunately, there's a great roof terrace with plenty of tables and chairs and good city views, and many of the guest rooms are bright. The hotel's location, near the metro and 20 minutes to the city center, makes it popular with guests seeking good value for money. During the week, the hotel is full of business travelers going to nearby European Union offices. At breakfast on the weekends, tourists mill about -- groups of friends, couples, and the occasional family.

This boutique hotel is just outside core Brussels, in the European Quarter. It's in a business district, a quiet spot, with little traffic noise and none from bars, but it's not desolate. Schuman (both lines 1 and 5) is the nearest metro station, seven minutes' walk from the hotel. Airport buses stop here and at Michel-Ange, a bus station three minutes' walk from the hotel. Intercity train lines and a train to Luxembourg pass through Gare de Bruxelles-Schuman, 11 minutes' walk from the hotel.

Rooms

Two styles of rooms, both with spacious layouts, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, and wooden desks

The Standard Double, Standard Triple, and Superior Family rooms here are furnished simply but are bright and comfortable. Beds, either twins or a double, have cushy headboards and are dressed in crisp white linens and topped with two plush pillows. Thick gray curtains help keep early-morning sunlight at bay. The Standard Triple can accommodate three single beds without compromising too much floorspace; Superior Family Rooms have fold-out double sofa beds and can sleep up to five people. There's no wall art, but rooms get a pop of color from chartreuse bed runners and matching throw pillows, and the black Eames chairs give a stylish flourish. On the long wooden desks are flat-screen TVs. Those that want to bump up the boutique factor could consider the Special Double which has a summer-camp-cabin-meets-Swiss-chalet ambiance. Walls here are made entirely of wood with visible knots, with a pallet wall behind the bed. Another fun, stylish touch is the retro record player, complete with a stack of LPs. The bathroom in this unit has a walk-in shower with a rainfall showerhead. The other more standard room categories have shower/tub combos. Toiletries are paired down to just shower gel and hand soap. Past guests note the hotel's back-facing rooms are wonderfully quiet.

Breakfast service, laundry service, and roof deck

Chelton Hotel is a relatively basic hotel with few facilities, but it does have a sizable rooftop terrace offering plenty of seating and expansive city views. Although the lobby is rather dim, its long deep couch and lounge chair are inviting. The hotel offers a breakfast buffet (not included in room rates) with gluten-free options available. Like much of the hotel, the breakfast room is paneled in wooden pallets, but here two large skylights let in plenty of light. For a business-oriented hotel, it's surprising that the Chelton has no meeting rooms or business center. But there is a public Mac desktop in the lobby; the front desk will print, photocopy, and fax things; and there's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
