Bottom Line

The 40-room Hotel Mediterran is a mid-range property situated on the Buda side of the city, slightly outside of the center but with easy enough access to attractions via public transport. Rooms are clean and comfortable -- if impersonal -- with modern amenities including air-conditioning, generously stocked minibars, flat-screen TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. While decor throughout is decidedly mid-range and bland, the hotel has upscale extras such as concierge service and a private whirlpool and sauna, which can be rented out for an extra fee. There's also a decent daily breakfast buffet (for a fee), a lobby bar, and free outdoor parking or paid underground parking. Travelers may want to compare rates and amenities with Hotel Charles; it's slightly closer to attractions and has rooms with kitchenettes, but decor is more dated.

Scene

Mid-range hotel with Mediterranean-inspired decor

The Hotel Mediterran is situated in a contemporary five-story, cream-colored building constructed in 2001. Inside, the Mediterranean-inspired lobby pairs beige tiled floors with off-white walls and salmon-pink accents. Generic blue and beige couches feel dated, and faux column and stone accents come close to crossing the line into tacky. The bar/lounge area feels a little more modern with a sleek wood floor, wood bar, and upholstered bar stools with high backs. This competitively priced hotel attracts budget-minded travelers who don't mind staying slightly outside of the city center.

Location

Slightly outside of city center, on the Buda side of town and near a bus stop

The hotel is situated on a busy multi-lane road slightly outside of the city center on the Buda side of Budapest. There are several restaurants in walking distance and the MOM Park shopping center and the Budapest Convention Center are about a seven-minute walk away. Main sights, though, are a real hike, and most guests choose to drive or take the bus to attractions. Luckily, the nearest bus stop is just a four-minute walk. Most major attractions on the Buda side of the city -- including the Citadel, the Gellert Thermal Baths, the Fisherman's Bastion, and Buda Castle -- are around about 20 to 25 minutes away via public transportation. Chain Bridge is 27 minutes away by public transportation, and Pest attractions such as the Hungarian State Opera and Central Market Hall can be reached in a half hour or less. The airport is a little over an hour away by public transit or a half hour by car.

Rooms

Clean rooms with average decor and modern amenities including air-conditioning and minibars

Hotel Mediterran offers Twin/Double and Triple Rooms as well as connecting rooms. Most rooms measure between 215 and 280 square feet and are clean and comfortable, but have generic decor, with red wall-to-wall carpeting and off-white walls plus salmon-pink accent walls. Upholstery is beige and light-blue and furniture is made of blonde wood. While the look of the decor can feel dated, rooms are well-kept and carpets, linens, and other amenities were updated or replaced in early 2015. Amenities include air-conditioning, safes, 32-inch flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and generously stocked minibars. Bathrooms pair beige tiled floors with white tiled walls and have shower/tub combos and hairdryers. Guests in front-facing rooms sometimes complain of noise from the main road outside.

Features

Lobby bar, private sauna and whirlpool, and buffet breakfast (for a fee), but no restaurant

The hotel offers a daily breakfast buffet for a fee with decent hot and cold offerings including eggs and sausage, cereal, fruit, coffee, and -- a nice bonus -- sparkling wine. However, only breakfast is served, and there's no on-site option for lunch and dinner. But there is a nice lobby bar with four bar stools and lounge space plus an outdoor terrace. The hotel's other main feature is a small private sauna and a whirlpool tub with mosaic tiling -- private sessions with candles and sparkling wine can be booked in advance. Sessions cost an extra fee, but guests find the prices reasonable. The hotel also has a conference and event room with glass windows, which can host up to 40 guests. The hotel has a 24-hour reception desk and staff can arrange for local transportation, childcare, laundry service, and tickets to attractions. For guests with children, cribs and high-chairs are available. There's also a computer and printer available for guest use, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Free outdoor parking is available, and underground parking is available for a fee. Dogs and cats are allowed in rooms, for a fee.
