Bottom Line

The three-pearl boutique Howard Johnson Inn Palermo is situated in a somewhat lackluster part of the Palermo neighborhood, northwest of and quite far from the city center. Cooler areas of the neighborhood, with more shops and cafes, are about 15 minutes' walk away in Palermo Hollywood and Soho. The hotel itself has a fun, modern feel and offers HoJo brand basics like free breakfast and Wi-Fi, and a meeting room. The 24 rooms are simple but stylish, with a good amount of space, flat-screen TVs, and minibars; some rooms have balconies. Rates aren't much higher for the pool and trendy fusion restaurant at the upscale Palermitano Hotel in Soho.

Scene

Boutique chain hotel with a modern interior and few public spaces

The Howard Johnson Inn Palermo is a small boutique property that opened in 2012 in a nondescript, narrow building in the trendy neighborhood of Palermo. Through the front doors, guests will find a clean and modern design in the lobby which features gray glossy floors and a sleek gray front desk. Two pink armchairs and glass walls with printed designs add a bit of color and spice to the small space. The only other public area is the breakfast room. It sports simple white tables and chairs, and a colorful blue and green floral statement wall. From the breakfast room guests can step out onto the patio which has a few tables and chairs, stone benches with colorful padding, and trees in blue pots. The hotel receives a mix of travelers seeking a budget-friendly spot with just the basics: a room and free breakfast.

Location

In the hip neighborhood of Palermo, near restaurants and nightlife

The Howard Johnson Inn Palermo is far from the center of Buenos Aires, about 25 to 30 minutes by car. Its surrounding streets have a good number of garages and construction sites -- so the area can feel a little abandoned at night and noisy during the day. But, it’s set in the trendy, local neighborhood of Palermo, so there are things to see and do nearby. Overall, the area is known for its restaurants, cafes, bars, and boutique shopping, and while there’s plenty of that on surrounding streets, the best options are about 15 minutes' walk away in Palermo's hip Soho and Hollywood areas. Otherwise, it’s a 25-minute walk to Plaza Armenia, a popular plaza in Palermo. For tourists who want to see the main sights of Buenos Aires, there’s a bus stop around the corner from the hotel and a metro stop a 12-minute walk away. It takes 45 minutes to an hour by car to reach Ezeiza International Airport.

Rooms

Modern chain-like decor, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi

Available rooms are typically clean and fairly spacious, with a modern but chain-like vibe and decor. Carpet and drapes are grayish-brown, while beds have white linens with dark purple throws and pillows. Statement walls with soft-gray and cream wallpaper are a nice touch against dark-wood furnishings. All rooms are equipped with desks, flat-screen TVs, minibars, air-conditioning, kettles for coffee and tea, and free Wi-Fi. Bright white-tiled bathrooms have vessel sinks and a decent amount of counter and shelf space. They offer showers, bidets, toiletries, and hairdryers. A few rooms have private balconies. Some guests have experienced street noise.

Features

Free breakfast buffet, outdoor patio, single meeting room, and free Wi-Fi

Though there's no hotel-run restaurant or bar, the Howard Johnson Inn Palermo does have a free breakfast each morning that includes pastries, fresh bread, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit, juice, and coffee. The breakfast room has a lovely outdoor patio too. The only other on-site amenities are a single meeting room and free Wi-Fi throughout. Faxing and photocopying services are available. There’s no parking on-site, nor a gym.
