Bottom Line

The Lincoln House Private Hotel is a quaint, if a bit dated, B&B-style property housed in two conjoined Victorian townhouses. Its upmarket address is leafy and residential, though still within walking distance of Cardiff city center. Rooms are heavily furnished with antique-inspired decor, but all have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Its the excellent free breakfast here that really stands out. Guests should note, however, that this property lacks an elevator.

Lincoln House Private Hotel

Scene

Family-run B&B-style hotel with an emphasis on Victorian decor

Comprising two lovingly restored, semi-detached townhouses dating back to 1900, the elegant stone facade of Lincoln House Private Hotel oozes a Victorian vibe. The period look continues inside with original pretty tiled flooring, carved wooden door frames, and ornate molded cornices. The hotel's front lounge is awash with Victoriana including pleated tasseled drapery, gilt-framed oil paintings, cast iron fireplace, and even an antique organ; some find it all a bit too stuffy and dated. A family-run hotel, Lincoln House has a homey vibe. No elevator, however, means the several dozen steps to the top floor would be a challenge for the mobility-impaired.

Location

The hotel sits on a pleasant tree-lined street in a residential neighborhood, within walking distance of the city center.

The hotel is situated on a wide and tree-lined street just outside the hubbub of Cardiff's main city center shopping area. Referred to as the "Chelsea of Cardiff," the area is attractive and largely residential -- with little in the way of shops, bars, or fast food restaurants. While just a few minutes' walk from huge swathes of green parkland and the River Taff, the hotel is also within easy walking distance of the bustling city center and Castle Quarter.

Rooms

Rooms feature Victorian decor (that can feel stuffy) and have some soundproofing issues, but modern amenities include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

The hotel has 23 rooms, most of which are decorated in understated traditional styling with antique-like furnishings and plenty of period touches; however, some find it less elegant and more stuffy and tired. Other rooms, fortunately, have a bit more of a modern feel in the decor. The property's Four Poster rooms include intricately carved mantelpieces, heavy velvet drapes, and four-poster beds. Amenities include large flat-screen TVs (with Freeview channels), tea/coffee facilities, and free Wi-Fi, while bathrooms are clean and well maintained with shower/tub combos or tiny standalone showers. Top-floor attic rooms have sloping ceilings so they can feel smaller than the others, while road-facing rooms overlook the parking lot and well-trafficked road -- poor soundproofing and creaky floorboards might also disturb more sensitive guests.

Features

Outstanding breakfast with local produce and traditional Welsh flavors

The traditional Welsh breakfast served up each morning is certainly an outstanding highlight of the hotel. Served in a bright and airy breakfast room, the morning meal consists of a particularly hearty choice of local eggs, bacon, mushrooms, and Welsh lava bread -- made with seaweed. There's also the usual selection of fresh fruit, yogurts, and cereals and it's included in the room rate. The hotel also has free off-street parking, which can be very limited and expensive in the area.
