Bottom Line

With a pool, a kids’ club, an adequate buffet restaurant, and a small spa, the H Top Palm Beach is a decent pick for families and couples on a budget. Rooms, however, are hit or miss. While Superior Rooms have been renovated and feature air-conditioning, nice bathrooms, and updated tiling on floors, Standard units are tired and dated. Location within walking distance of the beach and the city center is a plus, but the property is on a busy road, so light sleepers may want to request a room at the rear of the hotel.

H·TOP Palm Beach & SPA

Scene

Partly renovated, with an attractive lobby -- and a number of dated rooms

Formerly the Ancla Hotel, this family-friendly budget hotel was partly renovated in 2013, when H Top hotel chain bought the property. The new management is still in the process of updating rooms and common areas, which makes for uneven experiences here. The renovated spaces are mostly attractive and show attention to detail. The lobby, for instance, has an original layout, with several sitting areas divided by purple walls that create cozy spaces with comfy armchairs and tables. These small living rooms open onto a serene hallway featuring a skylight, lots of lush plants, wooden benches, and a fountain. Non-renovated areas, however, are not as attractive. The Standard rooms still feature old-fashioned striped curtains and thin bedspreads with pastel flower prints, as well as old tube TVs.

Location

On a busy road within walking distance of the beach, restaurants, and shops

The hotel is located on one of Lloret’s main thoroughfares, which means heavy traffic at times, and street noise that carries all the way to the rooms overlooking the pool. Fenals Beach -- somewhat quieter than Lloret’s main beach -- is within walking distance, and there are many restaurants, bars, and shops nearby. The city center can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes on foot. Girona-Costa Brava Airport is located a 30-minute drive away, and Barcelona can be reached by car in just over an hour.

Rooms

All rooms have balconies -- but non-renovated units are dated and somewhat drab.

H Top Palm Beach features 153 rooms, all with balconies overlooking either the pool or the street behind the hotel. The Superior rooms have been renovated, and have air-conditioning, cream-colored floor tiles, updated bathrooms with tubs, and somewhat nicer furniture -- though dated striped curtains, patterned bedspreads, and small tube TVs remain. The Standard units, however, have old-fashioned red terrazzo floors, dated decor, and quite some wear and tear. Some guests have complained about poor maintenance and lacking soundproofing. Rooms on the top floors and at the rear of the hotel are probably the safest pick here -- those units have been renovated and get less street noise. Wi-Fi is available in all rooms for a fee.

Features

A small pool, a spa with hydrotherapy and a sauna, and a kids’ club

H Top Palm Beach has a number of solid amenities, including a small L-shaped pool surrounded by loungers (though some guests complain that there aren’t enough when the hotel is full); a small spa complete with a hydrotherapy circuit and a sauna, and a buffet restaurant. Those looking to soak up some sun can head to the rooftop solarium, which features a whirlpool and loungers, and is generally a little quieter than the pool area.

The hotel also offers a couple of perks for families, such as a kiddy pool adjacent to the bar and off the main pool, and a kids’ club complete with a game room and activities. Family-friendly entertainment is available during peak season.
