Bottom Line

H Top Royal Star is a large budget hotel catering to families and couples, but popular during peak season among groups of young partiers. Rooms are spacious, bright, and perfectly adequate, with decent bathrooms, air-conditioning, and balconies. In-room amenities, however, are basic, and walls paper thin. Hotel highlights include two small pools, a buffet restaurant, a small spa, and a kids’ club -- but this hotel is far from upscale, as its official 4-star rating suggests. Sister property H Top Royal Beach offers better rates, a location closer to the beach, and an overall more relaxing atmosphere.

H·TOP Royal Star & SPA

Scene

A large hotel better suited for young partiers than for families and couples

This hotel is similar to many other H Top properties in Lloret de Mar: large, and somewhat impersonal given its size and popularity among young revelers. The lobby is a large space featuring overall generic decor. There are a few seating areas with aquamarine furniture matching the color of the ceiling and the doors; three phone booths, and a couple of computers that guests can use for a fee. Decor style in other areas -- including the restaurant and the bar -- is equally generic and typical of large beach hotels in the area.

The property features several kid-friendly amenities, as well as a spa -- which may be a perk for couples -- but during peak season noise can be an issue, so those looking to spend some quiet, relaxing days may be disappointed.

Location

A short walk from the city center

The hotel is located right off one of Lloret’s main thoroughfares. It is not, however, directly on the road, so street noise is less of an issue than at neighboring sister property H Top Palm Beach. Lloret’s two main beaches are both within walking distance, and there are many restaurants, bars, and shops nearby. The city center can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. Girona-Costa Brava Airport is located a 30-minute drive away. Barcelona can be reached by car in just over an hour.

Rooms

Spacious and bright -- but featuring basic amenities

The hotel offers 397 spacious rooms, all of which are equipped with air-conditioning and furnished balconies. Decor is mostly generic, with yellow bedspreads sprinkled with red flowers, matching curtains, and wooden furniture. Small tube TVs and hotel-brand toiletries is all there is in the way of in-room amenities. Bathrooms are fairly standard but nice enough, with cream tiling, shower/tub combos, and bidets. Walls are thin throughout, but light sleepers may want to request a room on the top floors, as noise from the pool and other common spaces carries. Wi-Fi is available for a fee.

The hotel offers two small pools, a spa, and a kids’ club -- but also subpar food

This property features two pools -- though guests complain there aren’t enough loungers available -- a small spa complete with an indoor grotto-stye pool, a sauna, a steam room, and two whirlpools; nightly entertainment during peak season; and a large restaurant serving subpar buffet fare. There are a few computers in the bar, and a couple others in the lobby that guests can use for a fee. The hotel also offers a number of kid-friendly amenities, including two kiddy pools, a kids’ club, and arcade, and family-friendly entertainment.
