Hotel Delfin

Located on a quiet street in central Tossa de Mar, the Delfin may not be the snazziest hotel in town, but there are a few things that make it stand out among other mid-range properties in the area. The property was fully renovated in 2008, and although decor is generic (think: dark wood paneling, navy accents, and cream-colored floor tiles throughout), both common spaces and rooms are kept spotless and in good shape. Unlike at many other similarly priced hotels, food gets great reviews at Hotel Delfin (especially its breakfast buffet), and the rooftop deck is a great perk for those looking for some peace and quiet. 

While spacious rooms with sofa beds are convenient for families, the hotel lacks specific kid-friendly amenities, and it draws mostly British, Spanish, and French couples looking for a clean, friendly hotel with good rates and a central location. Housed in a striking Modernist building right on the beach, sister property Hotel Diana has more going for it in terms of design and charm, but its rates are higher and it lacks a full restaurant. 

Hotel Delfin is located on a central but quiet street in Tossa de Mar lined with restaurants, bars, and shops. The beach is a two-minute walk down the street, and guests can rent loungers and umbrellas there for a daily fee. Main attractions such as the Tossa Castle, the ruins of a gothic church, and the old city walls are all about a 10-minute walk away. Platja d’es Codolar, a lovely cove located right below the ancient walls, can also be found within 10 minutes of the hotel. The nearest airport is Girona-Costa Brava, located a 40-minute drive away; Barcelona-El Prat Airport is an hour-and-a-half drive away, and is served by a wider array of airlines. The hotel lacks on-site parking.

The hotel has a total of 59 rooms, all exterior-facing and equipped with furnished balconies overlooking either the street or a small garden. Dark wood furniture, navy curtains and bedspreads, and small reading lights are generic and a tad basic, but blue walls and parquet floors are nice touches that give rooms a fresh feel. Large windows let in lots of light and are thick enough to keep the little street noise there is at bay. 

Amenities are great for the price, and include free Wi-Fi and safes, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and minibars stocked with a few snacks, water, beer, and sodas. Triple and Family Rooms have a sofa bed for a third guest, and Suites feature a separate living area. Bathrooms are spotless and spacious, with beige tiles and blue walls, shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and an array of toiletries. 

Hotel Delfin is modest when it comes to amenities, but the few there are on-site are outstanding. The restaurant serves breakfast and dinner in a spacious but simple dining room with natural light and a few dozen tables. Food gets consistently good reviews, especially the breakfast spread, which includes continental options along with sausages, eggs, fresh fruit, and bacon. The small bar serves an array of hot and cold drinks, as well as small bites and sandwiches during the day. Offering expansive city and mountain views, the rooftop deck is a quiet retreat complete with a small whirlpool, plenty of loungers, and a vending machine with sodas and water.
