Located in the heart of historic Charleston, The Restoration on King is a 16-suite boutique property surrounded by upscale shops, restaurants, and museums. The hotel blends modern furnishings with history, featuring exposed brick walls and restored original wood floors. While rates are high, they aren’t outrageous for a small, luxury venue with only a handful of spacious rooms. Lots of little perks abound for guests as well.
Scene
A historic boutique hotel with exposed brick walls and luxury furnishings throughout the property
Opened in 2010, The Restoration on King consists of four separate historic structures, including the Lucky Brand Jeans building on the corner of King and Wentworth and the GAP building, which host four suites. The building where the primary lobby is found was built in the 1880s. Throughout the hotel, exposed brick walls set the tone for the traditional-meets-modern design theme. With its designer furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows, the lobby looks like it could grace the cover of an interior design magazine.
Location
Prime location in the heart of Charleston's historic downtown
The Restoration on King has a prime spot in the heart of downtown Charleston's best dining, shopping, and tourist attractions. There are a variety of eateries within walking distance, including the Charleston Grill, Starbucks, Fish, and many others. For those primarily looking to explore the immediate area, a car isn’t necessary, as guests can also stroll to the nearby City Market and waterfront.
Rooms
Luxury suites with full kitchens; set up more like a townhouse than a hotel room
One- and two-bedroom suites have a washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchens with stainless steel appliances, private patios, flat-screen TVs, and modern furnishings. The Restoration's two-bedroom, two-story suite features nearly 1,600 square feet of interior space, and is set up more like a private townhouse than a hotel suite. This suite also has a private balcony with two separate seating areas -- one facing the courtyard and the other facing Wentworth Street. Bathrooms have modern appliances, waffle-weave spa robes, and Gilchrist & Soames products. The hotel provides nightly turndown service and white noise machines by the bed.
Features
Few major amenities, as typical for a boutique hotel, yet little perks offered
The New York City-style rooftop terrace has plush seating and features views of downtown Charleston. While The Restoration doesn’t have an on-site restaurant, staff provides room service from four nearby restaurants as well as continental breakfast in the lobby or breakfast in a basket delivered to suites upon request. Every evening the hotel also hosts a free wine and cheese reception in the lobby. Free bikes are available on a first come, first served basis, as are iPads. Valet parking is available for a fee. There's no gym on-site, but guests get free access to EcoFitness, a health club located down the block.
