Bottom Line

The 23-room BanThai Village is a boutique resort nestled into a narrow lane just near the entrance to Chiang Mai's historical Old City. The hotel is within easy walking distance of both the Night Bazaar and downtown on one side, and the Thapae Gate entrance to the moat and old town on the other. Rooms here are on the small side, but are tastefully styled with Lanna Thai design, handmade cushions, interesting art, and wood floors in the suites and around the building. All rooms have stocked minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and stylish bathrooms. The hotel has two swimming pools, one small, and one very small, and a pleasant bar/restaurant overlooking the pool. Compared to what's around it, the hotel is a good choice for a boutique and charming spot in a quiet location, still close to all the action.

Scene

Stylish and laid back boutique resort

The BanThai Village is a relaxed and stylish resort. Most guests here tend to go out during the day, on tours and exploring, leaving the property very quiet. The lobby is a bright, chic space with comfortable sofas, handmade indigo cushions, and framed drawings on the wall. This is a popular place to relax, in addition to the two small pools surrounded by greenery and lounge chairs. There are a few family rooms and large suites for groups, but the hotel is a smaller scale place, definitely not on the tour group list, and more of a spot for those who like quiet located in the heart of town. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and refined.

Location

Just 10 minutes on foot from the old city and the downtown/Night Bazaar area, in a quiet and narrow lane

BanThai Village is located just outside the historical Old City of Chiang Mai. It's about a 10-minute walk to the Thapae Gate, eastern entrance into the moat, and old town. In the other direction, it's about the same distance on foot to the Night Bazaar and downtown area. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, and other amenities nearby, but the hotel is down a small lane in a quiet alley, so it's located in a tranquil spot that doesn't feel like the city. The only drawback here is that there is little space for car parking in this narrow area if one happens to have a rental car, although the resort will find a space for those who do.

Rooms

Small, but stylish rooms with dark wood and indigo colors; suites feature rainshowers and separate baththubs

The rooms at BanThai Village are both stylish and traditional. They feature comfortable beds, cushions, and lots of artistic detail (the owner is an artist). Indigo colors prevail throughout, and the suites all have wooden floors, along with bathtubs and rainshowers. The standard Superior rooms have polished concrete floors and elegant decor. All the rooms except the suites are on the small side. Rooms all have stocked minibars, safes, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and electric kettles. If you want views of the courtyard along with a swivel panel wall, which allows guests to watch TV from either the bedroom or the living room, you'll have to splurge for the fancy BanThai Suite, the resort's largest living space.

Features

Two small swimming pools and poolside bar and bistro

The hotel has two swimming pools, one extremely tiny, and the other also small, but more suitable for a swim. There are a few sun loungers around the larger pool, and plenty of chairs and tables, as the hotel's small bar and bistro is located poolside. The bistro serves breakfast, but most guests go out for lunch and dinner. There is also a pleasant relax room upstairs above the small pool, with book-lined shelves, computers, tables to sit at, and lots of stylish dark wood paneling. Wi-Fi is free.
