It has almost 200 rooms, all of which feature flat-screen TVs, safes, electric hot water kettles, and free breakfast and Wi-Fi. The hotel has large conference facilities, a decent-sized swimming pool, a small gym, and a good Chinese/Thai restaurant that features dim sum lunch buffets. The hotel is popular with business travelers for its convenient location and facilities, and has comparable rates to the nearby competition. However, some rooms are small and the area sees a lot of traffic.
Scene
Popular with tour groups and business travelers
The Royal Princess Chiang Mai is popular among tour groups and business travelers for its excellent location downtown, group facilities, and reasonable rates. SInce the swimming pool area isn't all that big, and as most travelers here seem to be out for the day on tours or at events, the most popular hangouts in the hotel are in its food and beverage outlets. The free breakfast buffet is always crowded, and many guests and locals come in for the Chinese dim sum buffet put on by the Jasmine Restaurant. The lobby area is also a popular scene as the Dusit Khun Mae Lounge and Bakery has plenty of inviting sofas with colorful cushions to sit on while enjoying cocktails, coffees, or pastries; there is also an outdoor terrace section as well.
Location
Excellent location right downtown, minutes from Night Bazaar; but there's heavy traffic by day and it can feel seedy at night
The Royal Princess Chiang Mai is located smack in the heart of downtown Chiang Mai. There are tons of shops, restaurants, and bars around the hotel, and the famed Night Bazaar and popular Anusarn Market are within a five minutes' walk of the property. The hotel is very convenient for those who want to be in the center of the shopping and business area of Chiang Mai, although the old city area is 10 minutes away by car. The airport is about a 15- to 20-minute drive from here. The road outside the hotel is very busy with lots of traffic during the day -- not to mention that the streets around here are one-way, making it a pain for drivers. Additionally, the area surrounding the hotel gets a bit seedy at night, with plenty of karaoke and dodgy bars in the vicinity, and various touts hanging out on the corners.
Rooms
All rooms come with large flat-screen televisions, safes, and free Wi-Fi and breakfast
The rooms at the Royal Princess Chiang Mai all come with free Wi-Fi internet and a buffet breakfast. Additionally, all the rooms have large flat-screen TVs, electric hot water kettles, in-room safes, and writing desks. The standard Superior rooms are a bit small, but the suite rooms are large and have pleasant sitting areas, dining room tables, and several TVs. All rooms have shower/tub combos, although they are quite narrow and the bathrooms don't come with too many amenities other than the standard toiletries. Despite being in a high-rise hotel, the rooms lack good views, as they're mostly hemmed in by other buildings; but most guests here are out for the day, as this hotel is popular with both tour groups and business travelers.
Features
Pleasant pool, small gym, Jasmine Restaurant featuring Chinese dim sum buffet lunches, and good conference facilities
The hotel has a pleasant pool on the second floor, surrounded by sun loungers, and it's suitable for swimming laps if there aren't too many guests. There is also a small poolside bar, and adjacent to this is the hotel's small gym, which has just a few machines and some weights. More appealing is the hotel's Jasmine Restaurant, which serves Chinese and Thai food. The restaurant has a breakfast buffet for guests in the morning, and then at lunch serves an elegant Chinese dim sum buffet, before turning into an a la carte Chinese/Thai eatery at night. Downstairs in the lobby, the new Dusit Khun Mae Lounge & Bakery serves cocktails, coffee, tea, cakes, and pastries throughout the day and night, and has colorful cushions and elegant tables to sit at, as well as some outdoor tables in front of the hotel. The Royal Princess is also noted for its conference facilities, with several meeting rooms and a small ballroom upstairs.
