Bottom Line

The Bellevue Hotel is a two-pearl, 70-room hotel located inside the Plitvice National Park at entrance number two. Rooms are clean but basic, and the bathrooms are small, with some smelling of mold. However, many have beautiful nature views from their balconies. Parking is free and the hotel will extend guests' park entry tickets for a second day free of charge. It's also the cheapest of the three hotels within the national park. For something more comfortable, the three-pearl Hotel Plitvice next door is only moderately more expensive and has an on-site restaurant. Otherwise, the many private hotels and guesthouses outside the park in nearby towns offer a better value.

Scene

Affordable hotel in a fabulous natural setting with dated decor

The Hotel Bellevue is run by the government, as evidenced by the outdated '60s architecture and decor, and it feels as though little effort has been put into making this hotel an exceptional place to stay. Not surprisingly, the hotel was built in 1963 and has been reasonably well-maintained, but it has an institutional feel to it and there's a lingering smell of cigarette smoke. The natural setting, however, is fantastic and the hotel is particularly popular with solo travelers and couples.

Location

Right in the Plitvice National Park

Bellevue Hotel is located right inside Plitvice National Park, very close to entrance number two. It's a convenient place for hikers to stay who like to get an early start. The closest big city is Karolovac, 75 minutes away by car. Zagreb's airport is a two-hour drive away.

Rooms

Clean but cramped and dated rooms with en-suite bathrooms

Bellevue Hotel offers Single, Double and Triple Rooms with private bathrooms outfitted with walk-in showers. It’s worth getting a room with a balcony for the views and the sounds of the nearby waterfalls, so avoid the ground-floor rooms. Small and somewhat cramped, rooms can be a tight fit. And the streamlined furniture -- platform beds, open blond-wood wardrobes, and simple desks -- is dated and shows signs of wear and tear. But flat-screen TVs add a modern touch, and the beds are comfortable. White-tile bathrooms are almost charmingly dated, with Pepto-Bismol-pink sinks and toilets and tiny shower stalls. The standard of cleanliness is good, but some bathrooms smell moldy.

Features

Free Wi-Fi in the reception area, free breakfast, and on-site bar

Amenities are limited at the Bellevue, and while Wi-Fi is free, the connection is only reliable in the reception area. Breakfast is included in room rates, and it's served each morning in the dining hall, but other meals are only available at the Plitvice Hotel next door, or at other restaurants in the vicinity. The bar has a pleasant balcony overlooking the park. Medical staff are available around the clock. And pets are welcome.
