Bottom Line

Extreme Hotel is an eco-friendly, three-pearl resort with tons of on-site activities that focus on fitness, adventure, and extreme sports. With an on-site kite school and endlessly windy conditions, an on-site half-pipe, outdoor yoga studio, cross-fit gym, and a full-size trapeze with available circus lessons, this is not the place where vacationers come to spend their days lounging by the pool. There’s a small beachfront bar and restaurant that uses ingredients from the hotel’s on-site permaculture garden in nearly all of its daily changing menu items. The 19 guest rooms are bare-bones, with simple wood furniture, white bedding, and teeny tiny bathrooms. The hotel’s motto “live by the sun” not only implies action-packed days outdoors, but also touches on the need to restrict electricity usage -- which means there’s no air-conditioning. Directly next door is Kite Beach Hotel Cabarete, with fewer amenities and lower rates.

Scene

Eco-friendly adventure hotel

Extreme Hotel is the kind of place where staff members walk around barefoot, guests mingle with one another over a shared love of cross-fit, and the mint leaves in your mojito were just picked from the on-site permaculture garden. The hotel definitely caters to a niche market, but for travelers looking for an adventurous, active vacation with a side of eco-friendliness, this is the place to be. Staff members, many of whom are part of the hotel’s internship program, are mostly young millennials from all stretches of the globe. Guests are mostly couples and solo travelers who are attracted to the hotel’s communal activities, like daily morning yoga or circus camp. Others come to take advantage of the on-site kite school and Cabarete’s world-renowned wind conditions.   The hotel itself is a bit worn around the edges, with a cement facade and hand-painted sign of the hotel's logo over the front entrance. The beach-facing restaurant is a casual and rustic affair. It has plank floors and a palapa ceiling decorated with hanging kite boards.

Location

A five-minute drive from downtown Cabarete

Though its not within walking distance of downtown Cabarete, Extreme Hotel is about a five-minute drive from all of the area’s best shopping, dining, and nightlife. Extreme Hotel is a beachfront property subject to Cabarete’s world renowned wind conditions; which means guests can expect the wind to be whipping from early afternoon through late evening. The hotel is about a 25-minute drive from Gregorio Luperon International Airport. Parking at the property is free and easy.

Rooms

Simple spaces without air-conditioning

Rooms at Extreme Hotel are simple and have the basic necessities. With white walls, terra-cotta tile floors, simple wood furniture, and hand-painted Soren Kierkegaard quotes adorning the walls, rooms are humble, but they certainly reflect the hotel’s eco-friendly attitude. Rooms do not have TVs or air-conditioning, but most have ceiling fans and screened sliding glass doors leading to balconies or patios. Bathrooms are tiny, and dated (mint green sink, anyone?), with small shower stalls and and cracking tiles. Some rooms have desks and chairs, while others have random, seemingly pointless tables. There are no elevators here, but ground floor rooms are available.

Features

Activities galore with a side of eco-friendly practices

Boredom is hard to come by at Extreme Hotel, where days are action-packed with things like beachfront yoga, cross-fit training sessions, kite-surfing, and even trapeze lessons. The hotel offers personalized vacation packages ranging from weeklong yoga retreats, to fitness themed vacations that include nutritionist-planned meals and themed workouts, to circus vacations that feature twice daily trapeze lessons and classes in the circus arts. There’s also the on-site kite school where amateurs can learn to kite-surf or professionals can sharpen their skills. And though you won’t find many people lounging around the pool at Extreme Hotel, there is a small one in between the cross-fit gym at the half-pipe. In keeping with its eco-friendly practices, the hotel also has an on-site, organic permaculture garden -- the bounty of which is used in the hotel’s restaurant, which features a daily changing menu. The hotel offers free parking and free Wi-Fi, but breakfast is not included in the room rate.
