With its multilingual staff and speedy issue-resolution system, this modern, mid-range hotel emphasizes service. The central location is convenient (most of the city center is within walking distance), but the area is a little on the scruffy side. Rooms can be somewhat small but are functional and clean. Some aspects of the property appear a bit tired, but for a central Dublin hotel in this price range, the Mardron Hotel is a pretty good option.
Scene
Guinness bread-scented reception with funky flourishes
The Maldron Hotel is housed in a modern red-brick corner building where Bethesda Chapel and the Wax Museum once stood (a stone plinth commemorates them). Sliding glass doors welcome visitors into the bright, high-ceilinged lobby area, where lively patterned black-and-white wallpaper complements a trio of funky, bright reception desks manned by multilingual staff. Contemporary leather couches and glass-top tables provide seating areas for the predominantly tourist clientele the hotel attracts, while a faint whiff of the hotel's homemade Guinness bread can sometimes be detected emanating from the hotel's kitchens.
Location
Central though shabby surroundings near Dublin's main drag
This hotel is located in a slightly scruffy corner of central Dublin, three minutes' walk from the city's main thoroughfare of O'Connell Street. Right next to the hotel are such attractions as the Hugh Lane Gallery, the Writers' Museum, and the Ambassador Theater. The Garden of Remembrance is just across the road. A few blocks south is the River Liffy, across which are the medieval cobbled streets and famous nightlife of Dublin's Temple Bar District. The Dublin city 'Hop-on Hop-off' bus tour also stops right outside the hotel. The Maldron is located on the main bus route from Dublin Airport, and is within 10 minutes of the main rail terminals.
Rooms
Rooms are on the small side but have ample amenities
The hotel's 126 air-conditioned rooms are compact and functional, decorated in warm tones with modern furnishings. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Bathrooms are clean and simple, with a nice addition of extra-large towels. Double-glazing helps keep out noise from the street, but sound insulation between rooms could be better.
Features
Fruit smoothies and book exchange
A hot and cold breakfast buffet, including gluten-free and vegetarian options, is served each morning in the hotel's Stir Cafe, while an a la carte dinner is available in the evening. The Stir Bar provides a relaxed space for drinks, including fresh fruit smoothies throughout the day. Pizza can also be ordered to your room. A nice idea is the "take a book - leave a book" area where guests are free to swap their finished novels for an unread one. The hotel also has a "Make It Right" system, which aims to resolve guests problems as quickly as possible. On-site parking is also available for a fee, although space is limited.
