Set in a a Victorian town house in fashionable Ballsbridge with homey chintz, brass chandeliers, stained glass, and free bottomless hot beverages served all day, the 20-room Roxford Lodge Hotel at first might seem more posh B&B than mid-range boutique hotel. It goes all out with in-room amenities, however, which include free Wi-Fi and huge flat-screen TVs with DVD libraries, and separate taps for drinking water; most rooms also come with infra-red saunas and jetted tubs -- the Executive Suite, with a kitchen, bar area, and large sauna, is particularly special. The residential location offers quiet and easy access to Dublin center but without the hubbub. Those who don't mind being a little farther out might want to check out the Sandymount Hotel, whose rates tend to be a little lower.
Scene
Victorian town house inside and out, with hushed homey feel
Housed in a red brick Victorian town house fronted with a pretty, manicured garden, the boutique Roxford Lodge Hotel could still be easily mistaken for the smart Dublin home it once was. Much of the interior maintains the air of a refined, traditional residence, with polished granite flooring, molded cornices, and brass chandeliers. Mood is hushed and homey, and service is personalized -- tea and coffee are offered on arrival, and are available all day. Emphasis is squarely on the home-away-from-home vibe, and despite the old building, everything is kept clean and bright, if perhaps a little on the old-fashioned side.
Location
Set in residential street in Dublin's leafy Ballsbridge district
The Roxford Lodge Hotel is located on a residential road in Dublin's Embassy Belt -- a relatively quiet, leafy area in the city's fashionable Ballsbridge District. Trinity College, the major museums, and the renowned shopping area of Grafton Street are a 15-minute walk away, while Sandymount Beach is 20 minutes away on foot. Grand Canal, with its Thursday and Friday food market, is a five-minute stroll. Dublin Airport is about eight miles away, or a 45-minute taxi ride, depending on traffic. The DART train is within walking distance of the hotel, and bus links are right outside.
Rooms
Modern but homey rooms, most with saunas and jetted tubs
The hotel has 20 rooms, all of which are decorated in a more modern style than the public areas, with contemporary furnishings and smart, patterned fabrics. Standard in-room amenities include large flat-screen TVs with DVD players and movies, and free wired and wireless Internet connections. Beds are all orthopedic, while most rooms feature infra-red saunas. Bathrooms are nicely finished with jetted tubs and separate drinking water faucets. The Executive Suite is particularly impressive, providing a four-poster bed, two-person jetted tub, large sauna, kitchen, bar area, and balcony with views of the Aviva Stadium.
Features
Daily breakfast service and unlimited tea and coffee
Hotel amenities are on the light side, though a dining room serves a traditional Irish breakfast or a lighter continental option each morning (both for a fee), and tea and coffee is provided free of charge throughout the day. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, while an Internet workstation is also provided in the fabulously chintzy lounge area.
