The Cantur City Hotel is a solid three-pearl option for guests looking to be near the beach, restaurants, and shops in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The hotel is a two-minute walk from Playa de las Canteras, and it’s a 15-minute walk to the center of town. That said, the hotel is also near a large industrial harbor, and rooms that face that way can pick up a lot of noise. Albeit a bit generic in design, the 114 rooms have quality amenities that include flat-screen TVs, desks, kettles, and attractive bathrooms, though no balconies. A rooftop terrace with a swimming pool and hot tub is lovely, and a gym is well-equipped. Guests looking to stay closer to the heart of Las Palmas might want to check out the AC Hotel Iberia Las Palmas.
Scene
An unimaginatively decorated, mostly dated hotel with a lovely rooftop pool terrace
The decor in the Cantur City Hotel is unlikely to turn heads, but the hotel is nonetheless clean and pleasant. Decor throughout is largely dated, from the lobby's pleather forest-green couches to the restaurant's brass-framed chairs with old-fashioned green polka-dot print. A frosted glass bar with backlighting and chrome stools, however, add some modern elements. The most impressive (and contemporary) area is the rooftop terrace carpeted in fake green grass, with low wicker couches, chic draped cabanas, and raised wooden decking housing pools. The hotel attracts primarily couples on vacation who want to be within easy reach of the sand.
Location
Two minutes' stroll from the beach and 15 from the center of Las Palmas
Probably the best thing about the Cantur City Hotel is its location. The hotel is a two-minute walk -- if that -- from the broad golden sands of the Playa de las Canteras and the promenade that runs along its length. It’s also a 15-minute walk to the center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria proper, and the city’s pretty marina. That said, the hotel is very close to a large working harbor, and rooms that face it can pick up a lot of noise, and have decidedly unattractive views. Restaurants, bars, and shops surround the property. Guests looking to get away from the city can drive 10 minutes north to the volcanic landscape of El Confital. Expect a 25- to 30-minute drive to Gran Canaria Airport.
Rooms
Simply decorated, but spacious rooms with kettles and safes
The hotel’s 114 rooms are all spacious and simply decorated in a dated, but not necessarily unattractive, style. They have warm wood floors, simple wood furniture, white walls without artwork, and lamp wall sconces. Standard Rooms have two single beds that can be pushed together to make a double, along with bedside tables, an armchair next to a small table, a desk and chair, and a wall-mounted flat-screen TV. Bathrooms are decorated with beige travertine tile, and either have large, walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, bidets, hairdryers, and toiletries. One notable downside is that rooms lack balconies.Junior Suites, meanwhile, have a bedroom with a king-sized bed, and a separate living room with black leather couches. These come with big bathrooms with dual sinks, corner tubs with hydrotherapy jets, and robes and slippers. Larger still are Presidential Suites, which have two bedrooms, a sitting room, and a bathroom similar to that in the Junior Suites. All rooms have a mini-fridge, safe, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, plus guests get free bottled water and a welcome drink. While many of the rooms, and all suites, have pleasant views, some look out over Las Palmas’ industrial harbor, and can pick up quite a lot of noise.
Features
Rooftop pool terrace with a bar and hot tub, plus buffet breakfasts and dinners
The Cantur City Hotel has a decent list of amenities. The most impressive of these is the large and sun-drenched roof terrace, which has views over Las Palmas. As well as a number of couches, sun loungers, and shaded cabana beds, there are a bar, small lap pool, and a hot tub on a raised wooden platform. Downstairs, there is a restaurant that offers a buffet breakfast and dinner, though guests tend to be more keen on the breakfast than they are the dinner, although Cava in the mornings may help improve opinions. A decently equipped gym with cardio machines, a multipurpose weights machine, and free weights is available, as well as a sauna. Free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout.
