The five-pearl Hotel Atlantic Kempinski Hamburg
is a historic property packed with grand European decor and luxurious amenities. The hotel is situated next to Alster Lake, providing lovely views in some of its elegant rooms and suites, which offer modern comforts like minibars and flat-screen TVs as well as large
bathrooms. The impressive on-site restaurant serves German fare and seafood, while the bar is a popular spot and often features live piano music. An indoor pool, private movie rooms, a spa, and
extensive event facilities attract a number of vacationing couples and German
dignitaries. For something with more modern decor
and extensive spa and restaurant services, travelers might want to consider the Grand
Elysee Hotel Hamburg.
Scene
Luxurious hotel with a nautical theme
Built in 1909, Hotel Atlantic Kempinski Hamburg bills itself as the “White Castle on the Alster,” and indeed, its grand white stone exterior has a palatial appearance. This luxurious hotel exhibits its upper-class service immediately with a doorman outfitted in a suit
and black top hat. Interiors are elegant with marble columns, grand
staircases with gilded railings, and chandeliers, while large nautical paintings and 76 displays of
model ships throughout the hotel give the spaces a maritime flair. Other areas, like the
restaurant and meeting rooms, have similar grand styles with sophisticated
carpet patterns, high-end wooden furniture, majestic columns, and opulent
chandeliers. By contrast, the bar has an Art Deco-style with bold black and red
leather boxy chairs, wooden floors, modern lights, and shiny, reflective decor
elements on the walls. Most guests are couples on a romantic vacation who can
be seen congregating in the lounges and bar, though many guests have noted that it's also popular among German dignitaries.
Location
Located by Alster lake and within walking distance of shopping and dining
The hotel is located right by Alster Lake, a picturesque area in Hamburg. Jungfernstieg
and Neuer Wall, popular upscale shopping streets, are a 13-minute walk away. It takes three minutes on foot to reach Kunsthalle Hamburg, a museum with
an extensive German art collection. For nightlife, Sankt Pauli -- Hamburg’s red
light district -- is an 10-minute drive away. There’s a variety of restaurants on
surrounding streets, such as the laid-back A.mora, a lakefront restaurant with
stunning views that’s only a minutes’ walk away. The closest bus station is a
four-minute walk, while a major transportation hub (metro, train, and bus),
Hamburg HBF, takes nine minutes to reach. Hamburg
Fuhlsbüttel Airport is a 19-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Elegant rooms with minibars, Nespresso machines, and spacious bathrooms
Rooms are exceptionally modern with the same elegant
vibe seen in the hotel's common areas. Color schemes vary, but
sophisticated patterns on carpets and chic chairs, stately wooden headboards, high
ceilings, and contemporary chandeliers are common among the 221 rooms and
suites. Many rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that provide exquisite
views of the lake. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning,
minibars, and Nespresso coffeemakers. Suites are often characterized by
separate living rooms and some have balconies, while the Presidential Suite includes a pantry kitchen and two bathrooms. Luxurious bathrooms have marble countertops, large mirrors, and limestone
tiles, and most have both bathtubs and walk-in rainfall showers (Superior Rooms just have showers), while high-end extras include Molton Brown toiletries, fluffy bathrobes and slippers, magnifying mirrors, and electronic scales.
Features
Wellness facilities such as a spa and pool, plus meeting facilities and movie-theater rooms
True to its luxurious reputation, the hotel's Energy Clinic Spa provides a range of massages and
treatments. There’s also a large indoor pool with a few loungers and a couple
of sauna rooms. The fitness center isn’t open 24-hours, and some have noted that
it's quite small for a luxury hotel of this caliber. The hotel’s signature restaurant, Atlantic
Restaurant, is a white-tablecloth-and-candlelight experience with German and
maritime cuisine. Guests can visit Atlantic Alstersalon for a pricey breakfast
buffet and grab a late-night drink at the hotel’s large, swanky Atlantic Bar
while listening to live piano music. During warm days, the Romantic
Atlantic Atrium, an outdoor patio amid a garden and large fountain, is filled
with travelers. The hotel also offers a Smokers’ Lounge, afternoon tea service, as well as cocktails served
in one of the lounges, plus 24-hour room service is available.Meetings and events can be held in one of the 13
meeting rooms that can hold up to 1,200 guests. Some even have direct access to
the outdoor atrium. Guests have noted that these events can be bothersome and noisy, however. Private movie-theater rooms are also available for rent, where guests can have an exclusive movie screening with dinner and drinks. Other perks include free basic Wi-Fi, bike rentals, and on-site parking for a fee.
