The 300-room Holiday Inn Express Hong
Kong Kowloon East is an upper-middle-range, chain hotel located far from the downtown
Hong Kong area. The hotel is on top of a tall building that also houses an O
MTR Station, making the trip downtown about an hour on public transportation. A
free breakfast (that gets mixed reviews) is provided, and there are several
restaurants inside the shopping mall that shares the building. Rooms
are sleek and modern with minimalistic decor, contemporary bathrooms with pretty tile, work desks, and colorful modern art; some offer sea or mountain views. There are no mini-fridges
in the rooms, and elevators can get crowded resulting in long wait times. Guests should compare rates with Harbour Grand Kowloon, a hotel overlooking the harbor with a pool, spa, and seven dining options.
Scene
Sleek chain hotel on top of a shiny skyscraper
The upper-middle-range Holiday Inn Express Hong
Kong Kowloon East is located on top of a tall, modern building housing the
Tseung Kwan O MTR Station and the PopCorn Mall. There's a Crowne Plaza hotel in a twin
building facing the hotel. Getting an elevator up to the hotel can take some
time, especially since some of the elevators provide access to restaurants and are often crowded. The
lobby at the hotel has a futuristic feel with strips of lighting running
along ceilings and walls. Trendy lime-green couches and chairs offer spaces for guests to sit. Floors are polished marble and the whole lobby has a particularly sleek feel. Outside, there is a huge terrace with basket swings and
rattan furniture that provides a stylish place to kick back. Besides relaxing, guests can exercise on one of the
stationary bikes on the terrace, or surf the web on one of the computers.
Location
Atop MTR Station and PopCorn shopping mall, but far from downtown
This Holiday Inn Express is located atop
the Tseung Kwan O MTR Station and PopCorn shopping mall. The mall has a variety
of casual dining options including KFC and California Pizza Kitchen as well as
more expensive restaurants and a movie theater. The name of the hotel may be
misleading to some, as it’s a 30-minute drive east of Kowloon and far from the
downtown area (about an hour away on public transportation). Reaching the Avenue of Stars takes about an hour on public transportation and it’s an hour drive (or more, depending on traffic) to the airport.
Rooms
Modern rooms with pops of color and impressive views
Colorful wall decorations, geometric carpeting,
lime-green curtains, and blue bed runners add color to the otherwise somewhat minimalist rooms. These modern spaces are furnished with light wooden headboards and offer work desks with ergonomic chairs. All
rooms have electric kettles, free Wi-Fi, and 32-inch flat-screen TVs. The hotel is so high up the views from most of
the rooms are impressive, and some rooms have views of mountains or the sea, along with lovely skyscraper views. Bathrooms
are modern and appealing with tiled walk-in showers have satisfactory water
pressure.
Features
Free light breakfast, valet parking, stylish terrace, and outdoor self-service laundry
The hotel serves a free light breakfast buffet. There’s an
event room available for private events, and valet parking is offered. The hotel
has a big outdoor terrace with couches, chairs, and swings that provides a stylish place to relax. Outside there are
four stationary bicycles as well as a self-service laundry area with a sink, five
washers and dryers, and a vending machine selling drinks. Wi-Fi is free throughout and there are six computers available for guests to use.
