Bottom Line
The Maple Leaf Guest House is a budget-friendly property that's akin to a hostel. Its setting in the famous (or notorious, depending on your view) Chungking mansion won't be to everyone's taste and the Tsim Sha Tsui area and crowds can be a bit overwhelming. While rooms are small with very basic amenities, they are clean, secure, and -- most importantly for the majority of Maple Leaf's guests -- very cheap.

Scene
This no-frills budget guesthouse is set in the sprawling and sometimes chaotic Chungking mansion.
Maple Leaf Guest House is one of numerous similar lodgings that occupy the (in)famous Chungking mansion -- a sprawling collection of five interconnected blocks known as home to some of the cheapest accommodations in the city. Visitors first have the challenge of navigating their way through the dense and noisy crowds before locating the way in via an elevator (of which there are many and often have queues) right towards the back of Block E. Emerging on the twelfth floor, a corridor leads directly into the reception area -- a small room with a basic check-in desk and little else. The owner, however, is friendly and welcoming and, although dated, interiors are clean and fairly well-maintained. Its functional no-frills vibe attracts mostly younger travelers and backpackers looking for little more than a cheap bed for the night.
Location
Located on a busy road in the bustling tourist hub of Tsim Sha Tsui
The guesthouse is located on the busiest road in the bustling tourist belt of Tsim Sha Tsui near the southern tip of the Hong Kong peninsular. The surroundings are a lively and sometimes overwhelming churn of vendors, hustlers, and general street life -- as well as innumerable restaurants, fast-food joints, and retails outlets. The Tsim Sha Tsui MTR subway station Tsin Sha Tsui is just a minutes' walk away; it connects to Hong Kong island's Central district in just over 10 minutes.
Rooms
Clean and simple cell-size rooms with air-conditioning -- though towels cost extra.
Rooms are about as basic as they come, with sparse and simple furnishings, tiles floors, and thin-mattress beds. All rooms do come with small flat-screen TVs (with some satellite channels), hairdryers (for a fee), and air-conditioning units, as well as small ensuite bathrooms. Wi-Fi is provided free of charge and bedding is included, however towels are only available for a fee. While rooms are clean and well-kept, they are undeniably cramped and prone to noise from other guests -- some also lack windows.
Features
Luggage storage, 24-hour security, free Wi-Fi -- and little else
There's very little in the way of facilities beyond the usual currency exchange and luggage storage here. The block does have 24-hour security and Wi-Fi is also available free of charge, but there's no breakfast service, nor any dining on-site.
