Scene

Riverside hotel with generic exteriors and lodge-like common areas

The Best Western is a good option for long-term business travelers who want a functional property with self-catering facilities as well as tourists in search of a room with a view. The riverside chain hotel looks bland from the outside, but the lobby is a bit more stylish, with a wooden piano, green and red walls and pillars, wooden vaulted ceilings, and light-wood, slate, and brown accents that give it a contemporary lodge-like appeal. There's also a deck and a stone patio, both with views of the Columbia River and the Bridge of the Gods in the distance.

Location

Just off I-84 on the banks of the Columbia River

The Best Western Plus is located just off I-84, which runs along the Oregon side of the Columbia River, all the way from the coast and into Idaho. The hotel is right on the river, a couple of blocks from a Starbucks and a seven-minute drive from Hood River's quaint town center. Mount Hood is a 20-minute drive south and Portland International Airport takes just over an hour to reach by car.

Rooms

Simply furnished rooms and suites, some with whirlpool tubs and kitchens

The Best Western offers simply furnished rooms and suites with generic chain decor in a neutral color palates of beige and tan. All have with mini-fridges, microwaves, hairdryers, and flat-screen TVs with HBO. Some also have whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, and/or kitchens, and dogs are welcome in some rooms. The hotel also manages five Riverside Suites with one, two, or three bedrooms, and there's no minimum rental period. All have big kitchens and separate bathrooms for each bedroom. In-hotel suites are also available, some with whirlpool tubs and wet bars.

Features

Fitness center, pool, hot tubs, sauna, business center, free Wi-Fi, waterfront restaurant, and bar

The hotel offers a decent-size fitness center with modern cardio machines and a weight-resistance machine. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the simple seasonal outdoor lap pool, beyond which sits the Columbia River. There is also a sauna as well as indoor and outdoor hot tubs, and the hotel has a small business center with three PCs. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The on-site restaurant, Riverside, has indoor and outdoor dining with gorgeous views out onto the Columbia River Gorge. Seasonal a la carte menus are available at breakfast lunch and dinner, and most of the items are modern takes on traditional American food, with a few vegan options available. The lounge bar, Cebu, serves food from Riverside at mealtimes and also offers a late-night menu.
