Sunder Palace Guest House is a small budget hotel located near the railway station. The 22 rooms here vary a fair bit, and while only some have air-conditioning, all feature beautiful hand-painted decorative trim on the ceilings. Note that traffic noise may be an issue in some units. Amenities are unfortunately limited, however, and there's really just a simple vegetarian rooftop restaurant and an activities room, though the hotel can also book excursions and such at the front desk. Travelers looking for a spot with a bit more to offer may want to compare rates and amenities at the nearby Nahargarh Haveli, which has similar features and prices, plus a small massage room for guests.
Scene
Family-friendly guesthouse popular with international and local tourists on a budget
Sunder Palace is a simple, family-run budget guest house with strikingly ornate interiors, particularly for a hotel of this category. The lobby features lovely wood-trimmed windows and archways, plus intricately painted ceilings featuring traditional Rajsthani motifs. This decorative style continues in the hallways, with floral design paintings on the ceilings and on trim around the doors, though a display of antique guns attached to one wall sobers things up a bit. Other common areas include a lovely garden terrace set with tables, chairs, potted plants, and plenty of shade. Most guests here are travelers on a budget, and the property gets its fare share of international and domestic guests, including some families.
Location
Just south of M.I. Road, within walking distance of the railway station and a short drive to the Pink City
Sunder Palace Guest House is located in the Civil Lines neighborhood just south of the main M.I. Road thoroughfare (where there are plenty of shops and restaurants). It's about a 15-minute walk or seven-minute drive from the Jaipur Railway Station and about an eight-minute drive to the historic Pink City. Getting to the main Gangori Bazaar and its surrounding historic attractions, including the City Palace, the Hawa Mahal, and the Jantar Mantar takes about 12 minutes by car. Also about a 12-minute drive away are both the Albert Hall Museum and the Birla Mandir, both of which are south of the Pink City. Factor in about a half-hour by car for Amber and its famous namesake fort. The airport is a 25-minute drive away from the hotel, traffic permitting.
Rooms
Variety of simple, but beautifully painted rooms, with up to four beds
Sunder Palace has a wide range of room types, from non-air-conditioned Basic Rooms for one or two people, up to spacious Family Rooms with up to four beds. Decor is homey in a Rajasthani sort of way, with polished marble floors, older-looking (but well maintained) wooden furniture, bright bedspreads, and lovely hand-painted ceiling trim. Some rooms also have lovely alcove areas with additional low-to-the-floor seating. Note that some units have tube-style TVs and only higher-category rooms have mini-fridges (Super Deluxe Rooms add swing benches). Bathrooms feature open-plan, wet-room style showers. Basic toiletries are provided, but they aren't of particularly good quality, so bring your own if you're picky. Note that some rooms get traffic noise.
Features
Vegetarian restaurant and free Wi-Fi throughout
Facilities at Sunder Palace are rather limited. The charming rooftop restaurant is surrounded by potted plants, and provides a menu of primarily North Indian fare, but only vegetarian food is served. There's a sunny lounge room with lots of plush benches and chairs and a few tables. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The front desk can arrange local tour services, laundry, and foreign currency exchange.
