Bottom Line

The Ca du Ferra Farm & Relax is just two small rustic buildings converted into four guest rooms surrounded by pleasant and picturesque gardens. Its location is a five minutes' walk from the center and seafront of Bonassola village, and also provides easy access to Cinque Terre -- especially via the nearby train station. There's little to do on-site, though bicycle loan allows guest to explore the scenic surrounds and barbecues provide alfresco dining opportunities. All in all, it's an inexpensive and relaxing place to stay in what is already a pretty sleepy stretch of Italian coast.

Scene

Small and charming (if bland) family-run complex surrounded by rustic gardens

The conception of
the Ca du Ferra Farm & Relax dates back to 2000, when husband and wife duo
Aida and Antonia bought several plots of land and old buildings that were
converted over several years. Slowly stables and other rustic buildings were
restored and renovated into the simple and quaint rustic complex that stands
today. The "farm" is nestled in peaceful gardens adorned with
colorful flowers and blossoming fruit trees, run through with a charming stream
complete with a wooden footbridge, while tidy lawns are dotted with loungers and
picnic tables providing views out towards the sea. The property also includes
vineyards and lemon groves up on the hill overlooking the village that provide
organic produce including wine and grappa. With only four guest rooms, the
property has an intimate boutique ambiance, although it's certainly bare bones.

Location

Set in peaceful Ligurian fishing village, a five minutes' walk from beach

The hotel is
situated in Bonassola, a small fishing village on the Ligurian Riviera in
northwest Italy's La Spezia province. Narrow roads wind down to the train
station -- a few minutes' walk away -- and just beyond to the village center
with a few restaurants and bars. Bonassola's shingle beach overlooks lovely
clear sea and is popular in the summer providing a pleasant place to sunbathe
and take a dip. There's also lots of lovely coastline that can be explored in
the local area, including the stunning Cinque Terre National Park, about half an hours' drive away -- or around 10
minutes' by train.

Rooms

Air-conditioned rooms beside outdoor spaces for barbecues

Accommodations at
the hotel are spread over two units -- "Il Casottino" and "Il
Mulino" --  with two guest rooms in
each. "Il Casottino" is located next to an ancient watchtower and is
surrounded by lemon groves, while "Il Mulino" (or "The Watermill") is
positioned overlooking a street. Both have outdoor areas with gazebos,
barbecues, and seating for al fresco dining, while inside amenities include free
Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Interior design is clean and simple, with air conditioning and well-maintained bathrooms (that have tiny showers). While "Il
Casottino" provides distance views of the sea, "Il Mulino"
provides a more secluded and intimate atmosphere. There are just four rooms
available in all, and a couple of them are on the small side.

Features

Al fresco breakfasts and free bicycle loan

While there's no
dining room or restaurant on-site, breakfast consisting of homemade cakes,
bread, yogurts and pastries can be arranged to be delivered to the room -- or
served in the garden (but it is not included in the rates). The hotel provides the
loan of the bikes for guests to enjoy the popular local cycle route, while
select farm-made wine and grappa is also available to purchase. There's also
free parking and Wi-Fi on-site, but no full restaurant nor gym.
