Some rooms are tiny
The Whatever Art Bed & Breakfast is a small and charming budget property that stands apart with its creative decor and warm hospitality, both courtesy of the artist owner. The five individually decorated guest rooms range significantly in size, and have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. However, there are only two bathrooms that are shared amongst the five rooms. A free homemade breakfast is served daily, and there's a small outdoor terrace frequented by peacocks. It's not exactly centrally located, but public transport options are readily available and the beautiful, 19th-century Campo Pequeno Bullring (now used for events and shops) is one minute away. For a bigger hotel featuring guest rooms with en-suite bathrooms, travelers may want to consider the nearby Alif Hotel Campo Pequeno, though it doesn't have the individual charm of this bed-and-breakfast.
Scene
Cozy and artsy bed-and-breakfast decorated with original art
Whatever Art Bed & Breakfast is situated in a 1930s house reopened as a bed-and-breakfast in mid-2013. This cozy and artsy guesthouse has a charming and gently whimsical vibe thanks in part to bright, original modern paintings, many of them created by the owner himself, Carlos. Indeed, Carlos is a real highlight of the spot -- guests consistently find him friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The lobby features original wood floors, a triangular velvety purple couch, and bright modern art that pairs well with vintage pieces like Persian rugs and ornate upholstered chairs. The small patio/garden behind the building is another highlight, especially because it attracts neighborhood peacocks. This property is small, though, with only a lobby, breakfast room, patio, and five guest rooms with shared bathrooms. The relaxed atmosphere attracts leisure travelers, and the smaller space is ideal for solo travelers and couples.
Location
A one-minute walk from stunning 19th century bullring, but somewhat far from other attractions
This guesthouse is situated on a pleasant tree-lined street in the Campo Pequeno neighborhood. While it's not in the most central location, the area offers easy access to the city center via public transportation. The neighborhood has a couple of beautiful sights of its own, too. The Campo Pequeno Bullring, situated in a lovely, 19th-century red-brick building with elegant domes, is just a half-block away and is both an event space and shopping/dining venue. Parking at the bed-and-breakfast comes with a daily fee. - One-minute walk to Campo Pequeno Bullring
Rooms
Original art and wood floors -- but shared bathrooms and some rooms are tiny
The Whatever Bed & Breakfast has five individually decorated guest rooms featuring wood floors, white walls, and crystal chandeliers. While color palettes vary, rooms are all nicely decorated with coordinating bedding, drapes, original artwork, and a nice combination of modern and vintage furniture. Single, Double, and Twin Rooms are available. Rooms vary significantly in size, though -- some are quite small, while others are roomy enough to have a couch or sitting area. Three rooms overlook the wall of a neighboring building, while the two other rooms overlook the street or patio and are brighter. Overall the building is old, but rooms are clean and furniture is well-kept, although guests occasionally complain of thin walls. All rooms have flat-screen TVs with cable, and free Wi-Fi. There are also wardrobes for storing clothes. But there are no mini-fridges or coffee/tea facilities. The major drawback here is the lack of en-suite bathrooms. There are two communal bathrooms shared amongst the rooms, which guests tend to find easy to share. Bathrooms are somewhat dated with freestanding shower/tub combos and beige tiling, but they are clean and artistically decorated like the rest of the house. Hairdryers, towels, robes, and slippers are provided.
Features
Free breakfast with homemade items, outdoor terrace with peacocks, and well-liked owner
This cozy bed-and-breakfast has few extra features, as would be expected from a property of this size. It does offer a nice daily breakfast in a pleasant breakfast room. The breakfast varies by day but often includes the usual suspects such as cereal, bread, cheese, eggs, meat, plus homemade cakes or even homemade jam. The property also has a charming patio, frequented by peacocks, with a small sitting area and garden. Guests consistently find the owner helpful, and he works as a kind of personal concierge who can lend a hand with tickets, transport, tours, and other traveler needs.
