Bottom Line

The 129-room, lower-middle-range Citadines Barbican offers contemporary apartment-style accommodation a two-minute walk from the Barbican tube station. Note that while the property is accepting guests, it's undergoing renovations until May 2017. Its modern studios and one-bedroom apartments come with kitchenettes, dining areas, and en-suite bathrooms, plus flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi is free. Note that rooms have few electrical sockets and guests must dispose of trash. Free tea and coffee is available 24 hours in the lobby, and breakfast is available for a fee. There are a business center and laundry facilities on-site for guests, and travelers appreciate its proximity to the vibrant dining and nightlife scene. For a more traditional hotel feel with a restaurant and fitness center, consider the nearby (but pricier) Apex Temple Court

Citadines Barbican London

Scene

Apartment-style studios in a no-frills building

Set over seven floors in a modern red-fronted building in London's downtown Barbican area, the Citadines offers apartment-style studios and larger one-bedroom apartments. Decor is contemporary, if generic, with most furnishings in warm earth tones. The large lobby, which doubles as a breakfast room, has bubble-printed carpets and sofas next to wooden tables. While Union Jack-printed cushions and statement wall prints give some pop, overall atmosphere is somewhat impersonal. The atmosphere is generally quiet, as most guests are out exploring the city. Travelers should note, however, that the property is undergoing renovations until May 2017 but is still accepting guests.

Location

In the Barbican neighborhood, near shops and restaurants

A two-minute walk from Barbican tube, the Citadines is well located both in its proximity to the financial district and sights. It's situated on a busy but not overly noisy London street in the low-key Barbican neighborhood. Barbican Centre, a seven-minute walk from the hotel, is Europe's largest multi-arts and conference venue with plenty going on. Tourist hotspot and home of The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden is a 20-minute bus ride and for some historic culture, St Paul's Cathedral is a 13-minute walk. Two supermarkets are within five minutes' walking distance. For those wishing to embrace the clubbing scene, Fabric nightclub is a six-minute walk. Heathrow Airport is an hour's taxi ride or just under an hour by public transport, although this requires three train changes.

Rooms

Contemporary studios with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and en-suite bathrooms

The Citadines Barbican offers 129 rooms divided between Studios, Deluxe Studios, and one-bedroom apartments. Apartment-style rooms provide the comforts of home, and the decor is sophisticated and minimalist. The design consists of attractive hardwood floors topped with patterned rugs, stylish wood and leather furniture, neutral-tone linens, modern artwork over the beds, and pops of green and blue. Starting at 25 square meters (269 square feet) for the Studio and rising to 30 square meters (323 square feet) for the Deluxe, both cater to a maximum of two guests and have double or queen-size beds. All have a kitchenette with electric hob, microwave, toaster, cutlery, and crockery. A kettle for tea- and coffee-making is also included, but lack of sockets in the kitchen area make using it awkward.

At 45 square meters (484 square feet), the one-bedroom apartments have a four-person capacity and the upgrade includes a king-size bed, full living area with sofa bed, a DVD player, and bath as well as the standard shower. There are a safe, iron and ironing board, large flat-screen TV, and free Wi-Fi in every room. All have an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower, fresh towels, and toiletries. Light housekeeping is offered daily, though guests will have to take trash out to hallways themselves. Also note that windows only open a tiny bit.

Features

No gym or restaurant, but breakfast and laundry facilities available

Given that this is a self-catering hotel, there are few amenities on-site. Most notably, there are no gym or full restaurant. Guests can purchase a continental breakfast downstairs for a fee, plus tea and coffee is always free in the lobby. For those staying more than just a few nights, the basement laundry room is a bonus and for corporate travelers, the small business center is useful. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
