Siesta Suites Hotel

In a city of grimy crash pads, boozy all-inclusives, and expensive luxury properties, the Siesta Suites is a pleasant small-scale alternative. It won't win any style awards, but the decor throughout the hotel is homey and cheerful. Expect to see details like wrought iron seating, white plastic lounge chairs, potted plants in every nook and cranny, and boldly painted walls. Beyond a tiny sundeck with an attached bar, there are no real common areas, and it's best used as a home base for going out and exploring Cabo San Lucas. The neighboring Restaurante Salvatore’s is so close that it feels like part of the hotel and, indeed, many guests use it as their de facto social hub. Most guests are couples and small groups of friends who spend most of their days (and nights) out in town.

The hotel is in central Cabo San Lucas, within a short walk of what most travelers will want to see and do when in town. The most popular restaurants, shops, and attractions are all nearby, including Cabo Wabo Cantina, the restaurants at Tesoro Los Cabos, and the city’s famous marina. Expect to walk no more than five minutes to reach any of these destinations. It's a bit more of a trek to reach Medano Beach, the lively and safe-for-swimming stretch of sand in town. Ambitious guests can be there in about 20 minutes on foot, though most will opt for a cab, which is a five-minute trip. The area’s nearest international airport -- Los Cabos International (SJD) -- is a 45-minute drive from the property, just outside of charming San Jose del Cabo. 

Like the hotel's common areas, the rooms here are a simple affair with an almost homey style. Compared to some of the more drab budget options in town, though, they are a pleasant step in the right direction. We liked the colorful hand-painted furniture, and simple local artwork keeps things bright. Otherwise, expect to see a few granite surfaces and generic tile floors plus the token wrought iron accent here and there. Older fabrics do look a bit dated, and include tropical-print bedspreads (in most rooms) and rust-colored cushions. While the hotel isn't smack in the middle of the city's rowdiest areas, some guests have reported noise from the nearby bars and restaurants.

Air-conditioning, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with cable are all standard. Rooms are divided among three categories. Entry-level Standard Rooms offer square footage typical of many budget chain hotel rooms. Suites upgrade to separate living and sleeping spaces, and offer all of the above plus kitchenettes (with microwave, larger refrigerator, and several small appliances). The hotel’s Penthouse includes a huge, private rooftop deck, plus separate living and sleeping areas and a full kitchen. Bathrooms are clean and straightforward across the board, with generic bath soaps and standard walk-in shower stalls.

Even for a budget hotel, the features here are limited -- there's no pool or proper restaurant on-site. Situated on the second floor, a small sundeck provides lounge chairs, patio dining sets, and plenty of umbrellas -- all amid a lovely garden-style atmosphere with views to the street below. At night, a tiny bar at one end opens to provide beer, wine, and basic cocktails. Many outlets confusingly advertise the neighboring restaurant’s fountain as the hotel pool. However, we confirmed that hotel guests are not allowed to swim in it. Parking is limited to just four off-street spaces (free), however, ample additional parking is available on the street. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
