Bottom Line

For travelers looking for sun and stunning views of the ocean at a value price, it's hard to beat the all-inclusive Sun Club Eldorado. A unique property in Mallorca, its isolation and elevation make it the perfect outpost for disconnecting from the world and being immersed in nature, sports, and the vividly hued sea. Lovers of creature comforts are better off looking elsewhere, as the rooms are in need of refurbishing, but for those willing to overlook crusty showerheads and raggedy drapes, the quirky, camp-like vibe of the Club and its abundant activities are worth taking advantage of. There's no real beach, though, and access to the water is down over 300 steep stairs; those who would prefer to be near a sandy beach might prefer the also affordable Hotel Don Pepe (it is adult-only and not all-inclusive, however).

Oyster Hotel Review

Sun Club El Dorado

Scene

Sprawling value hotel set in the wild outdoors

This property feels more like a campsite than a hotel. It's gigantic -- covering a space of over 645,000 square feet (60,000 square meters) -- and in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by endless blue sea and nature. Broken down into small bungalows that are scattered across the property, it has a very rustic feel that appeals to lovers of the outdoors who are happy to forego creature comforts in favor of stunning surroundings. The landscape of the hotel is full of inclines and steps, making it poorly suited to the elderly or people with reduced mobility. It is popular with families, young couples, and groups of friends who enjoy the communal atmosphere inspired by the camp-like grounds and appreciate the many activities organized by the hotel's entertainment team.

Location

Three hundred feet above sea level, and with stunning sea views all around

There is nothing within walking distance to the Sun Club Eldorado, though it is serviced by a bus that goes to El Arenal -- a nearby beach town with shops, bars, and restaurants -- and to Central Palma. Both places can be reached in under 30 minutes, but to explore other less frequently trodden corners of the island, it's advisable to rent a car. The reward for staying on such a remote part of the island is the view. At 300 feet above sea level, the Eldorado offers unfettered views of the ocean -- from the dining terraces, the pools, and even some of the bungalows. However, there is no real beach, just a rocky slab, and there are over 300 steep steps to reach the water -- where it is not really possible to swim.

Rooms

Rooms in need of a refresh, but with first-class views

The bungalows are the weakest point of the Sun Club Eldorado experience. In need of some sprucing up, the rooms are no-frills, with white popcorn walls, dated tile floors, and shabby drapes and bedspreads. Expect crusty showerheads in the bathroom, stained grout between the tiles, rusty window handles, and yellowing toilet seats. Only a few of the rooms have air-conditioning, and may be prone to ants and critters if food is left out, given the very rustic surroundings. There were some refurbishments in 2014 and 2015, however, so some rooms may be in better condition than others. The views of the water below are first-class, and the individual nature of the bungalows adds an element of privacy and exclusivity that is hard to find at a value hotel.

Features

Magnificent views, multiple pools, abundant sports, and entertainment options

The Sun Club Eldorado is a happy haven for sporty lovers of the outdoors -- it offers more recreational facilities than just about any property in Mallorca. Between ping-pong, volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, squash, a shooting range, and even a rock climbing wall, there are plenty of ways to stay active. The main pool is stunning -- circular, surrounded by loungers, and with views of the ocean below. The other two pools are less to look at, though one has a water slide for children. A variety of extra services, from bike rentals to a diving center are all located on the property, which also has a massage parlor and a wellness center -- uncommon perks for a budget hotel.

There's a large dining area with an outdoor terrace offering views of the pool and the ocean. Wine is on tap, and one of the buffet trolleys has drawings of the Flintstones on it, but given the campy, cheerful atmosphere, it works. All-inclusive rates cover alcoholic drinks and all meals, but the food and drink quality is subpar. Entertainment is a very big deal at the Eldorado, and includes performances by Pirates, Irish dancing, a Michael Jackson tribute, and guest appearances from a monkey.
