Bottom Line

With a great location for exploring the historic sights of Manila, stylish contemporary rooms with great amenities, and several on-site dining options, The Bayleaf is easily one of the best upper-middle-range options in town. Aside from the sleek rooms, the rooftop bar -- featuring stunning panoramic views of Intramuros and the surrounding area, and a mellow yet chic vibe -- is the highlight here. Just note that the hotel lacks some of the amenities expected of hotels in this price range, including a fitness center, a pool, and a spa.

The Bayleaf Intramuros

Scene

A 57-room stylish boutique with a popular rooftop bar

The Bayleaf is a small, chic hotel located right in the old walled city. First opened in late 2011, the hotel quickly became one of the favorite upper-middle-range properties among travelers looking to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Makati but close to historic sights. The modern, sleek style here stands in stark contrast to the historic buildings found just steps away, some of which date back to the 16th century. Inside, the hotel is contemporary and stylish, with a spacious lobby featuring a metal and glass staircase, a white mural with bay leaf design, and a sitting area with a few black armchairs. Rooms are equally attractive, with white accents that contrast with the black floors, and colorful details in pillows, bed runners, and some walls.

Location

In Intramuros, within walking distance of most historic sights

Those looking to explore the historic Manila will be hard-pressed to find a more convenient location. The Bayleaf is right in historic Intramuros, the old walled city of Manila established in 1571 and now a National Historical Monument. Right outside the property is the old wall -- built in the 16th century to keep invasions at bay -- and just blocks away are some of the oldest structures in Manila, such as Fort Santiago. Most of Manila’s historic sights can be found within the walls of the old city, including the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, and lots of colonial buildings, all within easy walking distance of the hotel. There are a few restaurants and bars within a couple of blocks, and guests can find a fast food joint or two less than a five-minute walk from the hotel. Intramuros Golf Course is right next door to the hotel, and Rizal Park can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes. Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Makati business district are about a 30-minute drive away in normal driving conditions.
